Ray Fabik, brand president of Caring Transitions — the franchise that provides downsizing, right-sizing, estate sales and online auctions, and move management solutions — has spent decades honing his expertise in franchising, caregiving and leadership. With a unique career trajectory that includes hands-on experience as a caregiver, mergers and acquisitions, and franchise coaching, Fabik has crafted a vision for Caring Transitions that prioritizes franchisee success, client compassion and a transformative impact on the senior care industry.

In a recent “Meet the Zor” podcast interview, 1851 Franchise CEO Nick Powills sat down with Fabik to discuss his journey into franchising, the Caring Transitions business model and his vision for the brand’s future. Fabik shared insights into his personal connection to the senior care space and why he believes Caring Transitions is a unique opportunity for franchisees.

A transcript of Fabik’s interview with Powills has been provided below. It has been edited for clarity, brevity and style.

Nick Powills: What’s your backstory? How did you “accidentally” fall into franchising?

Ray Fabik: My journey started in retail — working with large retail brands — before an opportunity came my way at Comfort Keepers, which was my introduction to franchising and senior care. One of the unique aspects of Comfort Keepers was that everyone — myself included — had to start as a caregiver.

For a few weeks, I worked hands-on with seniors and it completely shifted my perspective on leadership, business and serving others. From there, I worked closely with business owners in the franchise, particularly the top performers, which helped me understand what franchisees need to succeed. Later, I moved into mergers and acquisitions in the senior care space, which gave me the insight to understand the key components of building and sustaining a franchise system.

Six years ago, I joined Caring Transitions, which has been the perfect blend of all my experiences in franchising, coaching, and senior care.

Powills: Was caregiving a new concept for you, or did you have personal experience with it before Comfort Keepers?

Fabik: At the time, caregiving was entirely new to me. Coming from a big retail job, I’ll admit I was terrified stepping into someone’s home to provide care. But that experience opened my eyes to the often-overlooked needs of seniors and their families.

It also fundamentally changed my leadership style and business approach. I realized that it’s possible to run a great business while making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Powills: How would you describe Caring Transitions to someone unfamiliar with the brand?

Fabik: Caring Transitions transforms the way seniors and their families navigate life transitions. Whether it’s downsizing, estate sales, move management or online auctions, we handle the often-overwhelming process of moving into senior housing or clearing out a lifetime of possessions.

Our mission is to make these transitions as stress-free as possible. Recently, we helped a family whose parents were both diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and experienced strokes within weeks of each other. They needed to move into senior housing quickly, and their house was full of belongings. We guided them through everything — from deciding what to bring to arranging their new space.

Powills: What kind of franchisees are drawn to Caring Transitions?

Fabik: Many of our franchisees come from personal experience — they’ve been through the challenge of helping aging parents or loved ones transition and want to help others in the same position.

We also attract entrepreneurs passionate about serving others, often complemented by our auction side of the business, which appeals to those interested in estate sales and asset liquidation. Our franchisees typically share a deep empathy for the clients and families we serve.

Powills: What is the investment, and how does profitability factor into your approach?

Fabik: The initial franchise fee is $48,900, with a total recommended investment of around $100,000 to ensure franchisees have the resources to hire staff, market their business and grow sustainably.

Profitability is a major focus for us. While gross sales are important, it’s profitability that ensures long-term success for our franchisees and the brand. By helping our franchisees focus on acquiring clients and maintaining a reliable staff, we build the foundation for a thriving business.

Powills: What is your vision for Caring Transitions in the years ahead?

Fabik: Big picture, we want to transform how seniors and their families transition through life stages. Right now, this process is fragmented and overwhelming for most families. We aim to make Caring Transitions a household name, much like the way companies like Comfort Keepers reshaped the narrative around aging in place.

Growth isn’t about being the biggest — it’s about being present where families need us most. If someone is moving from Chicago to Florida, we want there to be a Caring Transitions in both locations to ensure a seamless experience.

Powills: What advice would you give someone considering a Caring Transitions franchise?

Fabik: Passion and focus are key. If you’re driven to help others and can focus on two main priorities — getting clients and taking care of those clients — you’ll be successful.

We’re not here to sell franchises. We’re here to match the right people with the right opportunity. That’s why we spend so much time ensuring prospective franchisees understand what they’re getting into and whether it’s a good fit for them.
