Fast Casual: Restaurant safety check? New AI platform watches, reports violators

Facial and object recognition software will be used to make sure employees are wearing required hats and masks.

China will be testing a data intelligence program called KanKan to make sure restaurants are following food safety regulations. According to a recent article in Fast Casual, the service will be able to use facial and object recognition software to make sure employees are wearing required hats and masks.

When the technology finds an employee who is not complying with the rules, it photographs the person. The system currently has a 96 percent accuracy rate and will be initially tested in 200 restaurants before being implemented elsewhere.

"It sets the foundation for us to potentially triple our business with the city of Shanghai in 2018 and expand to most of the 8 million restaurants located in cities throughout China," said Kai-Shing Tao, CEO of KanKan's parent company Remark Holdings.
