For many retail and service businesses, hiring has become one of their biggest operational headaches. Owners spend weeks posting jobs, scheduling interviews and hoping applicants show up. High turnover and labor shortages have become accepted as part of doing business.

DOGPerfect is proving there is another way. Rather than struggling to attract employees, the pet wellness franchise has found that its dog-friendly culture, wellness-focused mission and community reputation naturally draw enthusiastic applicants. In fact, the leadership team has staffed an entire new location in a single day, giving franchise owners one less operational challenge to worry about.

A Business People Want to Work For

DOGPerfect has built its business around creating a welcoming experience not only for customers and their dogs, but also for employees. The concept is centered on premium pet nutrition, wellness, grooming, and community engagement rather than simply selling products. Associates spend their days talking with pet parents, recommending products and services to improve the dog’s quality of life, and participating in local rescue events instead of working in a traditional retail environment.

"When we put an ad out for a store associate or dog bather, we get so many quality resumes because people love working with dogs," Rob said in a recent interview. “For example, at our newest store, we had 30 bather applicants and 50 associate applicants within a day or two.”

Instead of struggling to find candidates, DOGPerfect is able to focus on selecting the right people.

Hiring an Entire Team in One Afternoon

DOGPerfect's most recent hiring experience illustrates how dramatically the model differs from many retail businesses. Rather than stretching hiring over several weeks, Rob and his wife and co-founder, Linda, scheduled interviews back-to-back in a single afternoon.

"Linda and I did the hiring for our most recent store because we wanted to see what it was like," Rob said. “We just booked interviews every 20 or 30 minutes at the store one afternoon, and we had the whole staff within that day. We were just taking piles of people and saying, 'Yeah, we don't even need to continue to talk to all these people, but I would talk to this person.’ It hasn't been hard if you take a disciplined approach to it.”

For prospective franchise owners, that creates a significant operational advantage. While many restaurant and retail operators spend considerable time recruiting hourly employees, DOGPerfect's hiring process has consistently generated a deep pipeline of applicants who already have a passion for pets.

Culture Drives Better Applicants

DOGPerfect's ability to recruit employees begins long before a job posting goes live. The stores are intentionally designed as destinations where customers bring their dogs, interact with associates and spend time exploring new products. Team members become trusted advisors on nutrition, wellness and enrichment rather than simply cashiers behind a register.

"We aren’t just a retail stop where someone's coming in, grabbing their food and leaving," said Bri Dunn, Director of Franchise Marketing. "We want it to be an interactive experience, a place where customers come and bring their dogs, hang out for a little bit and test different products, and have a conversation with our team members."

That environment attracts employees who genuinely enjoy working with animals and interacting with customers, creating a stronger culture from the outset.

Community Engagement Strengthens Recruiting

DOGPerfect also extends its brand beyond the four walls of the store. Locations regularly partner with local organizations, host ice cream socials, adoption events for rescues, and participate in events like "yappy hours". Employees often represent the brand at these events, giving them opportunities to engage with fellow dog lovers while strengthening community relationships.

"We are very involved in our communities," says Linda. "We love partnering with other like-minded organizations in the communities we serve. And we encourage our store employees and managers to be the ones out there in the community so they can talk to customers and put a face to the brand."

That visibility helps reinforce DOGPerfect's reputation as a workplace where employees can combine their passion for pets with meaningful community involvement.

Hiring Leaders, Not Just Employees

While DOGPerfect benefits from strong applicant flow, Rob emphasizes that successful franchisees still need strong leadership skills.

The ideal owner doesn't need previous pet industry experience, but they do need to know how to recruit, train and develop a great team while embracing the company's wellness philosophy.

"You need to be someone who is out in the community, loves dogs and knows how to build teams," Rob said. "It's also important that you're fully bought into the wellness philosophy because we’re built on genuine pet health. That commitment is what keeps our customers loyal, so it's crucial that local owners can carry out the DOGPerfect vision and deliver on the wellness promise authentically."

A Competitive Advantage Beyond Revenue

DOGPerfect's nutrition-first model, experiential retail environment, and multiple revenue streams have already positioned the brand differently within the pet industry. The ability to consistently attract quality employees adds another meaningful advantage for franchise owners.

As DOGPerfect expands beyond Florida, the leadership team continues to refine every operational system before accelerating franchise growth. That includes documenting hiring practices, training systems and operational processes that franchisees can replicate from day one. As Rob explained, the company is intentionally building repeatable systems so new owners can benefit from years of operational learning rather than starting from scratch.

For entrepreneurs evaluating franchise opportunities, that's an important differentiator. In an era when labor remains one of the biggest challenges across retail and food service, DOGPerfect has created a business where hiring can become one of the easiest parts of opening a new location.
