Domino's Rolls Out New Pizza Delivery Car

The overused image of a run-down pizza delivery car is a thing of the past—at least for Domino’s.

Your pepperoni pizzas will soon arrive in a retrofitted Chevrolet Spark subcompact car named DXP (a nickname for its delivery driving “experts”). The cars, which were designed through an online crowd-sourced contest, are outfitted to keep 80 pizzas warm from store to door.

The customized car is a bid to improve the way the company delivers its prepared food and boost branding power on the roads without having to build its own car from scratch. The car comes outfitted with plenty of pizza-centric gadgets, including a warming oven located behind the driver’s door.

“The Domino’s DXP is the first purpose-built vehicle aimed at revolutionizing pizza delivery,” said Russell Weiner, president of Domino’s USA, in a press release. “This innovation allows drivers to do their jobs with greater ease and efficiency, and demonstrates that Domino’s is absolutely fanatical about making perfect deliveries.”

The cost for a DXP is estimated between $20,000 and $25,000 apiece for a franchise, with the company footing the bill for the engineering costs. With 400 million pizzas being delivered every day, officials hope to sell beyond the initial order of about 100 cars. The initial batch of the fleet is expected to hit the streets within a couple of weeks.
