EATER: A List of Relief Funds for Coronavirus-Affected Restaurants, Bars and Food Service Workers

Nonprofit and aid organizations across the country are stepping up to support workers whose incomes have been compromised by COVID-19.

Each day, another American city orders the closure of its bars and restaurants in an attempt to enforce social distancing and slow the spread of the Coronavirus. From a public-health perspective, these closures are not just the responsible response to the outbreak, they are a matter of life and death. (New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told The Daily podcast this morning that we are “past the time of monetizing these decisions” and are now “at a point of deciding: how many people are going to live, how many people are going to die?”)

But for food service workers, these closures, many of which are indefinite, present a dire risk to their livelihoods. Fortunately, a number of nonprofit and grassroots organizations have stepped up to provide relief for food service workers temporarily or permanently out of work due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

EATER has compiled a list of such organizations, which include help for restaurants, help for delivery workers and help for bars and bartenders.

EATER also points out that diners can help support food service workers on their own by purchasing gift cards or ordering delivery where available.
