About Joe Mathews
Mathews began his career in franchising in 1985 recruiting franchisees for Subway, a 20-year old brand with only 400 stores at the time. During his time with Subway, Mathews helped grow the brand from 400 to 3,000 stores. Mathews, who earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, never really learned business from a traditional paradigm — instead, he approaches business through the lens of an artist, lending him a much more unique perspective and acumen.
Mathews launched Franchise Performance Group in 2002 with franchising’s “Winning Formula.” Through extensive experience in the industry, he had learned what made for the right kind of franchisee and understood that business candidates are not only looking to invest in a business, but also to invest in life and career objectives as well. Additionally, he was one of the first leaders in the industry to recognize franchising as a business with its own set of rules, and he carved out a way for the recruiting process to be treated as such.
Mathews has since written five books on franchising: “The Future of Franchising,” “Street Smart Franchising,” “The Franchise Sales Tipping Point,” “Developing Peak Performing Franchisees” and “How to Create a Franchise Sales Breakthrough.” He’s also written roughly 80 articles on the topic.
