Coffee sales are up at chains across the country.
Citing data from The NPD Group, Fast Casual recently reported that franchises are leading the way in coffee sales.
The news source stated that while coffee growth was experienced by both chains and independent stores in the past few years, chains are responsible for nearly three-quarters of all brewed coffee servings. Meanwhile, franchise locations also dominated for specialty coffee, accounting for 90 percent of servings.
Speed was of the essence for consumers, one more reason chains are winning out over full-service restaurants when it comes to java, according to The NPD Group’s Warren Solochek.
“Full service share of coffee servings has declined over time,” Solochek was quoted as saying. “Much of coffee purchasing is a ‘grab n go’ situation, thus the strength of QSR.”
Meanwhile, all growth in coffee servings over the past five years was attributed to iced brewed coffee and frozen/slushy coffee drinks. Hot coffee remained stagnant.
