A veteran of more than 25 years in the finance industry, Bridgette Obr started her own bookkeeping business in 2015 and a second business in 2020, providing personal finance services, and later adding business coaching. Obr specialized in offering other entrepreneurs advice on their own startups. Through her own experience in providing bookkeeping services over the years, she often worked with franchisees and learned that a proven business model can be a huge benefit — but only if you select the right franchise with a supportive corporate team and the right culture.

When she decided to expand her services, she reached out to BooXkeeping, the emerging bookkeeping franchise that offers online services to small and medium-sized businesses, and found that the support and culture offered by the brand really resonated with her.

“I really connected with them and the brand,” Obr said. “I like their hashtag: #coolbeancounters. I like that they are bringing personality into something that people typically think of as boring. That really connected with me.”

Obr looks forward to taking on a more active role within her community by offering her new business’ services in Frisco, McKinney, Prosper and Celina, Texas.

1851 Franchise spoke with Obr about her journey into franchising with BooXkeeping and her plans for the future.

1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?

Obr: I've been in finance for over 25 years. I started in corporate finance and then launched my bookkeeping business in 2015. Two years ago, I expanded into business coaching, becoming a Business Made Simple Certified Coach and a StoryBrand Certified Guide. This allows me to help small business owners develop financial, operational and marketing strategies to optimize their business growth. About a year ago, I decided to grow my bookkeeping business further. After meeting with the BooXkeeping corporate team, I was impressed by their offerings and felt a strong sense of community and family. I thought it over for about a year and then revisited the idea a few months ago, ultimately deciding to move forward.

1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?

Obr: Franchising has its pros and cons. In my bookkeeping work, I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly with other franchises and franchisees. It really depends on the franchise. However, franchising offers a proven business model, removing much of the guesswork in starting a business from scratch. Having built my coaching business from the ground up, I know how challenging it is to get all the moving parts in place and functioning properly.

1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?

Obr: Initially, I was looking for white-label bookkeeping support. However, after meeting the BooXkeeping team, I strongly connected with them and their brand. I love their hashtag, #coolbeancounters, and how they bring personality to a field that's often seen as boring. That really resonates with me.

Additionally, BooXkeeping is all about growth — both personal and business. They encourage stepping out of your comfort zone, which I find very inspiring.

1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?

Obr: I have big growth plans! I aim to create a self-managing business that allows me to focus on high-level strategy. To achieve this, I need the right team in place. I also love our Frisco community and want to become an active part of it.

1851: What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?

Obr: I understand the challenges of juggling business ownership while raising a family, even with years of homeschooling. Balancing personal life, family, travel and work is something I’ve experienced firsthand.

If you're doing something you like, it's worth it. But if you're doing something you truly love, time flies and it feels great to wake up and go to the office every day.

1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?

Obr: Do your research to ensure that the franchise you're considering is something you genuinely want to do. It will make the investment worthwhile.
