Q&A With Greg Pahl, Senior Marketing Manager, TWO MEN AND A JUNK TRUCK
1851 Franchise: How did you find your way to franchising and franchise marketing?
Greg Pahl: For nearly 17 years prior to joining TWO MEN AND A JUNK TRUCK, I worked for a national furniture manufacturer where I spent most of my career leading channel marketing for a nationwide dealer network. Although the company operated under a dealer model rather than a traditional franchise system, the structure was very similar. We worked with and communicated with hundreds of independently owned locations, maintaining strict brand standards, coordinating shared marketing strategies and providing centralized support. This experience has given me a strong foundation in building relationships with owners, refining local and national marketing strategies, and ensuring consistent brand alignment across a distributed network.
1851 Franchise: What makes franchise marketing uniquely challenging (and rewarding) compared to corporate-only marketing?
Pahl: With local franchise marketing, one size does not fit all. Each market has its own unique dynamics, customer behaviors, and competitive landscape, and the “secret sauce” for success can vary from one territory to another. What works in one market may fall flat in the next, which is why taking the time to understand each location and uncover the local insights that move the needle is critical. Working closely with individual owners and their teams to identify those opportunities, develop tailored strategies and then watch the results come to life is incredibly exciting and deeply rewarding.
1851 Franchise: What is the single most powerful lever a marketing team can pull to directly impact franchisees’ profitability at the unit level?
Pahl: As I mentioned earlier, the idea that “one size does not fit all” applies to this question as well. There are several core strategies that are pivotal for success. First, as a newer brand, it’s critical that a meaningful portion of the media mix focuses on building brand awareness. It’s difficult to earn a customer’s business if they’ve never heard of you or don’t understand your services. However, brand awareness can often take time to develop, so it’s important to balance long-term brand-building tactics with strategies that generate leads today.
The tactic that consistently provides the most immediate impact is local paid search. It is one of the most effective performance-driven channels and has repeatedly shown the strongest immediate return on marketing spend. By combining this strong lower-funnel tactic with top-of-funnel awareness efforts, franchisees can build both short-term results and long-term brand growth and ultimately profitability.
1851 Franchise: What is an untapped marketing opportunity you see for franchise brands?
Pahl: I’m a firm believer that marketing should be used to communicate and amplify your brand’s true strengths. One way we’ve been able to do that successfully is through partnering with influencers in relevant spaces (home improvement and organization).
For influencer marketing to truly work, both the message and the partner must feel authentic and genuine and if the partnership feels forced, their audience simply won’t engage. Influencer marketing is still a relatively new space for our brand, but we’ve already seen that when we collaborate with the right individuals, their audiences respond. And in those moments, our trusted, professional brand really shines through.
1851 Franchise: What is one marketing fad or buzzword that you believe will actually deliver real results in the coming year?
Pahl: Years ago, marketing was straightforward: Get your brand in front of as many consumers as possible, and the sales would follow. But today, the landscape has completely transformed. The rise of data, attribution models and constantly evolving digital platforms has reshaped not only how we execute campaigns but how we define and measure success.
At the core, however, I still believe one truth remains unchanged: If you consistently deliver a quality service and treat customers with professionalism, your brand will thrive regardless of trends, tools or algorithms. Strong fundamentals always win. That said, I’m genuinely excited to see how AI continues to evolve over the next five to 10 years. We’re already watching major brands like Apple leverage AI to produce content and ads faster and more cost-effectively. But the real power of AI, in my view, lies in its ability to enhance communication. AI will help us refine messaging, personalize experiences and deliver the right message to the right individual at the exact moment it will have the greatest impact.
1851 Franchise: What’s your boldest franchise marketing take?
Pahl: Building on my earlier comment about AI, I believe that within the next five years, AI will completely transform not only how marketing content is created but also how it’s personalized and delivered. Brands will take significant steps toward providing hyper-personalized, real-time marketing experiences tailored to each individual customer. The brands that master using AI to anticipate customer needs will have a major competitive advantage.
With that said, I also believe there is a real risk of an AI backlash where consumers will increasingly value authentic human creativity and storytelling over AI-generated content. They will place a premium on genuine/authentic information and content. The future of marketing will ultimately be a careful balance between leveraging cutting-edge technology and preserving the authenticity that builds trust.
