Griswold franchise owner Bruce McReynolds was recently featured on WFMY News 2 to discuss how older adults can prioritize their mental health beyond Mental Health Awareness Month

As the owner of Griswold in Greensboro, McReynolds highlighted that depression and anxiety are among the most common mental health issues in adults over 60, affecting over 14 percent of this population and presenting a growing public health concern. But the most important step in addressing these issues is understanding their root causes.

“Social isolation could be a factor — it affects over 24 percent of Americans and can lead to increased depression, anxiety and cognitive decline,” McReynolds said. “But other things, like chronic health issues, bereavement or life transitions, can come into play.”

McReynolds encouraged families and caregivers to take simple but meaningful steps to help older adults feel more connected. “Regular check-ins, whether it’s in person or virtual, can go a long way in addressing isolation,” he said. “Encouraging participation in community or faith-based activities, and utilizing companionship services such as professional home care organizations, can also help combat this isolation.”

He also shared four key strategies to boost mental well-being in older adults. “I’d say chief among those four points is staying connected,” McReynolds said. “Loneliness is one of the biggest threats to mental health in older adults — especially post-pandemic. Research has shown that isolation increases the risk of depression, anxiety and dementia, and it affects one in four of us. The second is promoting physical activity. Exercise isn’t just good for mobility; it’s a powerful mood booster. Just 30 minutes a day of light activity can reduce depression and improve brain function. Third is mental stimulation — keeping the brain active through things like puzzles, reading, learning new skills or simply interacting with others. And finally, encouraging healthy sleeping habits. Getting enough quality sleep is so important to maintaining good mental health.”
