With a growing senior population in North Carolina, more adults are in need of in-home care. Rather than transitioning into a long-term care facility, most adults prefer to stay in their own homes for as long as possible. Leveraging additional technology allows teams to provide even better care, boosting the number of people who can remain safe and comfortable at home.

Griswold of Greensboro, the in-home care franchise, is embracing artificial intelligence (AI) with its use of Sensi, a 24/7 virtual care agent.

“The virtual care agent allows us to not only improve the quality of care that’s being offered by our caregivers but also to provide care when we’re not there or when a family member’s not there,” owner Bruce McReynolds told the Triad Business Journal.

Sensi uses three pods, generally plugged into outlets in the bedroom, bathroom and living area, to detect potential risks by monitoring “care-related audio sounds.” After establishing a baseline, Sensi can pick up on falls, calls for help and other signs of physical distress.

“We’re familiar with the fall detector, which is a pendant that you press. We find that these pendants often end up in dresser drawers on or the nightstand. Even when they are worn, individuals are reluctant to press them,” McReynolds said.

Since implementing Sensi with his clients, McReynolds said the technology has already reported multiple suspected urinary tract infections and even gave feedback encouraging a client to seek medical care for a seemingly small need that ended up being a bone fracture.

“With this technology, these insights allow us to communicate with the family members feedback and recommendations to either fine-tune our care plans or seek intervention,” McReynolds said.
