How do I help franchisees open faster? Often, that means acting as a temporary back office or mentor during the earliest phases of a new business, assisting with initial hiring, setup and other foundational tasks. This is particularly true in service-based industries where staffing is often the largest hurdle to opening a franchise.

“In the summer, we turn on about 150 to 170 employees who come back each year,” said Brenna Dowd, chief operating officer of urSwim. “It sounds like a big lift, but we have a strong hiring and training process and really clean operational procedures. We’re able to ramp up in about 30 days, operate for 100 days and then scale back down.”

When a franchisor can show that a large-scale ramp-up is possible in 30 days using established systems, it gives franchisees a clear benchmark and a more efficient model to follow.

Five Practical Ways to Speed Up the Opening Process

To shorten the path from signing to opening, franchisors should focus on five key areas:

  • Standardize the Vendor List: Provide a vetted list of contractors, equipment suppliers and real estate brokers. Eliminating the shopping around phase can shave weeks off the build-out or equipment procurement process.
  • Implement a 30-60-90 Day Checklist: Use a project management tool to track each task from the moment the agreement is signed. Transparency allows both the franchisor and franchisee to see exactly where the bottlenecks are occurring in real time (and how to minimize them).
  • Focus on Early Local Lead Generation: Don’t wait for the doors to open to start marketing. Start early. Encouraging franchisees to build interest lists, or pre-sell memberships/services while the location is under construction, ensures they have revenue from the start.
  • Provide Hands-On Grand Opening Support: Having corporate staff on-site during the first week of operation can ease the stress of launch. As Dowd illustrated, urSwim remains hands-on with grand opening events that are tailored to the specific needs of each owner at the local level.
  • Simplify Staffing and Onboarding: Recruitment can be the source of significant delays. Providing templates for job descriptions, interview guides and digital onboarding tools can help franchisees build their teams more quickly.

Balancing Speed with Brand Integrity

While the goal is to reduce the time between signing and opening, it should never come at the expense of safety or brand standards. This is especially true in specialized industries where the margin for error is slim.

“We’ve always focused on scaling responsibly because this is a safety business,” Dowd said. “We’re in the business of risk mitigation. So, we need to make sure every franchisee understands that. Corporate is still scaling organically because we’ve been around for a while. We operate corporate almost like a franchisee.”

By maintaining high standards at the corporate level, the franchisor sets the tone for the whole system. When the leadership team takes a hands-on approach with new franchisees, it helps ensure speed does not come at the expense of brand quality.

Opening Faster Without Cutting Corners

So, how do I help franchisees open faster? The answer lies in strong training, clear operational blueprints and consistent corporate mentorship.

By removing the guesswork from the equation and providing a proven path to follow, franchisors can help their partners move from the dream phase to the operation phase of a new business with speed and confidence. Scaling responsibly helps ensure growth doesn’t outpace the systems needed to support it.
