McDonald's Plans to Reduce Antibiotic Use in Beef

The brand aims to prevent the rise of drug-resistant bacteria as it sees this as a major public health issue.

McDonald's will be reducing the amount of antibiotics used in its beef. According to a recent article in Nation's Restaurant News, the brand will decrease the percentage of use by 85% over the course of the next few years. The article cites a desire to fight the rise of drug-resistant bacteria as one factor responsible for the decision.

McDonald’s plans to set targets for this reduction by 2020 and start sharing reports in 2022. This change will impact supply chains globally as the franchise currently has over 37,000 locations worldwide.

“McDonald’s believes antibiotics resistance is a critical public health issue and we take seriously our unique position to use our scale for good to continue to address this challenge,” said global VP of sustainability, Keith Kenny.
