Melting Pot, the iconic fondue franchise with 92 restaurants nationwide and nearly 50 years of history, has strengthened its brand presence and business model by venturing into retail and e-commerce markets. The strategic move has enhanced brand affinity and created new revenue streams for the entire system. With a commitment to innovation in the retail space, Melting Pot continues to grow this arm of the business, further strengthening its connection with guests and boosting brand awareness even more.

Recently, Melting Pot has elevated its retail offerings, rolling out at-home fondue kits in partnership with Omaha Steaks, and there is more growth on the horizon.

At the heart of this expansion is the desire to make the Melting Pot experience accessible beyond the restaurant walls.

“Our key motivation with these continued additions was to stay within arm’s reach,” said Jennifer Lukas-Bourgeois, retail growth specialist for Melting Pot. “We want to meet the guests where they are, even if that’s outside of the restaurant. Providing a retail and e-commerce experience allows guests to have that same Melting Pot experience at home when they can’t make it to a restaurant without sacrificing quality whatsoever.”

In grocery stores, Melting Pot has launched two fresh cheese fondue varieties: a classic Alpine fondue and a cheddar and gouda fondue.

"We developed two delicious fresh cheese fondues, and we focused on the freshness of the fondue during the development process,” Lukas-Bourgeois said. “A lot of what you’ll find in grocery stores right now has preservatives and emulsifiers. Melting Pot’s fondues are made in Switzerland, flash-frozen and kept frozen until they’re stocked in the grocery stores. It really is restaurant quality.”

The product is currently available in 110 Safeway stores throughout Colorado, via Amazon and QVC, and the team is working to grow both its physical retail presence and e-commerce reach.

This retail strategy serves multiple purposes, including increased brand awareness and accessibility.

"Now, we're able to make that product available at home. People take home our iconic Wine & Garlic seasoning from retail offerings in-restaurant, but now they can have the whole experience,” Lukas-Bourgeois said. “Whether someone has experienced Melting Pot before and can’t make it into the restaurant or is looking for their first introduction, having these products available strengthens existing guests’ emotional ties with the brand while bringing new clientele into the restaurant, too.”

For potential franchisees, this retail expansion offers several benefits. It creates additional revenue streams through in-restaurant product sales and increases brand visibility.

"As a franchisee, you're going to build your business around your market and you’ll work to develop your presence in and connection with that market,” Lukas-Bourgeois said. “But, with additional retail offerings, there's a whole other arm of brand awareness that's happening around the brand and product."

Melting Pot continues to innovate in the retail space. Lukas-Bourgeois hints at future developments, saying, "We've got some other fondue-adjacent food items that we'll be launching before 2025 so stay tuned." The brand is also excited about upcoming seasonal chocolate fondue offerings that will enhance their product line.

By leveraging retail and e-commerce channels, Melting Pot is positioning itself as a forward-thinking franchise opportunity. This strategy not only drives brand affinity and revenue but also ensures the brand remains relevant and accessible in an evolving consumer landscape.

"We're making sure that we're in front of the consumers everywhere that they purchase products,” Lukas-Bourgeois said. “In the restaurants, in brick-and-mortar grocery stores and also online."
