A new proposal in Minneapolis is looking to crack down on the construction of drive-thrus for franchises and other businesses.

One of the main goals of the proposal is to improve safety in areas with higher pedestrian traffic. Minneapolis Council Member Lisa Bender, who co-sponsored the new proposal with Council Member Lisa Goodman said they want businesses to rethink how they design drive-thrus. If approved by the City Council, it would restrict where drive-thrus could be built in the city.

“The streets where a lot of people are walking, on our transit corridors, maybe we don’t want to have drive-throughs at all,” Bender told the Star Tribune. “If we do, we may want to strengthen our controls of them and minimize their impact on people walking.”

The proposal will be worked on over the next few weeks before returning to the City Council.
