New Year, New Grocery Store: Amazon to Launch New Grocery Store Separate From Whole Foods in 2020

How will Amazon’s new grocery store compare to its Amazon Go and Whole Food stores?

Why stop at two grocery store concepts when you can have three? According to CNBC, Amazon has officially begun hiring for its new grocery store, which plans to open in 2020 in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Woodland Hills.

While there is only one store in the works, Amazon expects this new grocery store to be a successful chain down the road. The Seattle, Washington-based e-commerce company recently posted job listings for a store leader, grocery associates and a food service associate. Unlike the Amazon Go stores that use cashierless technology, its new grocery store will feature a standard checkout procedure.

The Wall Street Journal reported in October that “Amazon had signed more than a dozen leases in the Los Angeles area as part of its plan to build out a new grocery store chain separate from the Whole Foods brand.”

A trip to Whole Foods costs quite the pretty penny. A New York Times article even reported that “Whole Foods costs far more than mainstream competitors”—but don’t just take their word for it.

“I love going to Whole Foods, but why is everything so expensive,” one Twitter user asks. Another Twitter user joked, “Wanna go on an expensive date? Take her to Whole Foods.”

But, good news everyone—the new Amazon grocery store will have a lower price point than Whole Foods, according to The Wall Street Journal.
