Newly Promoted To Manager? Avoid These First Time Manager Mistakes!

If you’ve just been promoted to manager, I have some advice for you: Stay the same, and show your human side.

In this video, I talk about some common first time manager mistakes that stem from inaccurate assumptions about what it means to be in management.

Understandably, your new job title stirs up some internal questions: “Am I ready to lead? How should I act? What will my team think of me?” As difficult as the transition may be, and although you may feel unsure, it’s important to stay true to who you are.

Many new managers alter their whole persona. This is one of the biggest first time manager mistakes I’ve seen over the years: New managers believe they have to be buttoned-up, super serious, and stoic. In an effort to come across as strong, capable leaders, they put on overly professional airs.

What’s the problem with your personality changing as soon as you’re promoted to manager? Well, your personality is probably what got you promoted in the first place! Chances are, you exhibited an effortless communication style. Or your boss noticed your natural, authentic interactions with teammates.

Another one of the most common first time manager mistakes is losing the human touch. Just because you’ve been promoted to manager doesn’t mean you’re above everyone else. Don’t let being in charge go to your head. Good managers are coaches and mentors – not dictators.

Demonstrate your humanity. It’s okay to be friendly and vulnerable with your team. Expressing emotion won’t make you seem weak – it’ll make you relatable. Leadership is all about connecting and showing that you care.
