What do you want us to know?Bret Alex Feaster: First and foremost I have to say I wouldn’t be doing this without the incredible ownership team we’ve put together – my wife Shelby, Caleb Kiebert, Summer Mencl, and Josh Nagel – all of whom I’m thrilled to be on this journey with.&nbsp;When I was going into college, I knew I wanted to own my own business, but I didn’t know what kind or what that would look like. I was a golfer in high school so I chose to go into the golf industry. I figured working at country clubs would help me build the kind of connections that could eventually lead to owning a business. I moved to California and worked as a golf professional for five years.As it turned out, my parents were the connection I needed to start a business. I moved home and opened my first Jimmy John’s in 2015 with their support. Over the past 10 years, we’ve expanded from one to eight locations in this area.&nbsp;I discovered Paris Baguette only a few months ago when my wife and I went to New York City with my parents to see some Broadway shows. We were staying downtown, and just around the corner from our hotel was a Paris Baguette. We’d never heard of it, but we stopped in one morning — and we liked it so much that we went back four more times during the four days we were there. We were blown away.One of the last times we were eating there, we started wondering if they franchised. I looked it up, and sure enough, they did. I immediately sent an email to express interest, and everything moved pretty quickly from there.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Feaster: Before going into franchising, I worked in California at a country club. I moved out to California to pursue that career, but ultimately decided to move back home to Kalamazoo to open my&nbsp; first Jimmy John’s.Franchising made sense to me because it’s a way to build your own business while receiving support from people who have already figured out the systems and procedures and have a proven model. Once I opened my first location, I realized how much it simplified the process of running a business.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Feaster: I was pretty ignorant to it before opening my first location, but I’ve learned a tremendous amount along the way. Anytime I give advice to friends or family who are looking to start their own business, I always recommend franchising over going it alone.There are so many tasks that need to be done on the back end when you start a business from scratch — marketing, advertising, R&amp;D, creating operations — and a franchisor helps with all of that. It allows you to focus more on the product and the customer. You still have to do some marketing and local work, but it’s two or three times more work to do it all on your own. Paying royalties to a franchisor is a no-brainer for the amount of support they provide. I love being able to let them play to their strengths while we focus on ours.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Feaster: Our first location will be in Portage, which is a town on the south side of Kalamazoo. Portage has been in need of and has been asking for a bakery for a while now. The city has recently put out articles stating they would like someone to open a bakery, so we’re excited to be the ones bringing it to them.But it’s not just about filling a need. Paris Baguette is so much better than any other bakery we’ve been to. We’re stoked for the whole town to experience the food and the atmosphere.&nbsp;I had been looking for another opportunity for a couple of years because Jimmy John’s is pretty tapped out in our area. I wanted something that fits our culture and had strong brand recognition but wasn’t already saturated here. Paris Baguette was the first to really excite me. Everything I read about the company — from its culture to the product to the global brand recognition — just made me more confident in the opportunity. I didn’t see any red flags, which was a big deal for me.1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?Feaster: We’re planning to build all six of our locations over the next three years. One next year, two the following year, and three the year after that. The first two locations will be in Kalamazoo, and the next four will be in Grand Rapids.&nbsp;Our hope is to create a reliable brand that everyone in our area recognizes and trusts. We want Paris Baguette to be a household name in all of Southwest Michigan and for everyone to be able to enjoy their products as much as we do.&nbsp;1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Feaster: A lot of people think the more stores you build as a franchisee, the harder your job becomes. But I always tell people it’s actually the opposite. The more locations you build, the easier it gets because you can add more layers of management. Once you get to four or five stores, you can afford to hire support staff that allows you to work from home more, travel more and focus on growing the business instead of working in the day-to-day. That’s something I think many owners don’t realize.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Feaster: My biggest piece of advice is to trust the franchisor and follow their systems exactly. I’ve seen many franchisees come in and try to make it their own business or reinvent the wheel, and that hurts the brand. For Dedrick Hill, the moving industry is familiar territory. After dedicating 37 summers to the business, he climbed the ranks from a driver to vice president at a major van line. He had built a comfortable career in San Diego, but soon realized it was time to build a legacy alongside his own family. Their grandfather owned the historic Dunbar Grill in LA and their parents successfully ran a South LA preschool for 35 years. Here’s what they had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Dedrick Hill:&nbsp;I've been in the moving business for 37 years. My family is full of entrepreneurs, so this was just the right thing to do at the right time. My brothers and I all have different backgrounds, but they all mesh together. This is the first time that we've actually had a business altogether as one, so it's cool to work with family every day.&nbsp;1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Darrell Hill:&nbsp;Before I was doing this, I was a director at a preschool. It's different to deal with adults than with children, but it’s fun and exciting.Duran McGregory:&nbsp;Before this, I worked in the sports and entertainment industry.Dedrick Hill:&nbsp;I worked for the major van lines and went from being a driver back in the day to a general manager and VP.&nbsp;Our parents were entrepreneurs and they taught us how to be business owners. My grandfather and his brothers were entrepreneurs, too. For us, it was natural because we were always taught to have our own business and to have total independence and autonomy.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Dedrick:&nbsp;I was always a brand guy and I knew that the brands worked. I come from a major brand, so I know how the brand sells. I’ve learned that different franchises give you different levels of freedom. Not all franchises are a good fit for you and you have to pick an industry that's familiar. I wouldn't go into something if I didn’t know how it worked because your takeoff will be a&nbsp; lot longer and your path is a lot harder.&nbsp;1851:&nbsp;What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Dedrick:&nbsp;We were approached by other competitors, but for us, it was really the story behind TWO MEN AND A TRUCK. We could have easily gone out and opened up our own moving company, but people in LA like a brand they can trust. The brand sells.Darrell:&nbsp;I called people that I knew who didn’t live here and they all said that they had moved with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK. One person did five moves with them and another person did three, so we knew the brand was out there.1851:&nbsp;What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Dedrick:&nbsp;We can really build this business out. It's not just TWO MEN AND A TRUCK. There's TWO MEN AND A JUNK TRUCK for junk removal, Merry Maids for cleaning services, and ServiceMaster, where we can do restorations. This will be the core business, but we have the first right of refusal for any of those other brands. This is just a start.Duran:&nbsp;The sky is the limit. Right now, our focus is building a strong foundation and serving our community well, but we’re excited about the long-term possibilities1851:&nbsp;Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Dedrick:&nbsp;We always give back. That's one thing we've always done as a family. My parents ran a very successful preschool in South LA for 35 years and gave back to the community by making sure the children ate the same quality food we ate at home. We think everybody should be treated fairly and equally. We do the same thing here. Our very first interaction with our trucks and our crews wasn't a move; it was a giveaway to a church.&nbsp;1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Duran:&nbsp;Be patient and trust the process. Building something meaningful takes time, and there are always going to be challenges along the wayDedrick:&nbsp;This isn’t always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding if you’re committed to it. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Sandeep KesiReddy:&nbsp;My business partner Sid and I go back a long, long time. We have known each other for 15 plus years.We went to college together and always had this thing about opening a business together. Then, our paths diverged for a while; I went into entrepreneurship, running a startup in the Bay Area, and Sid became a head of operations for a global company on the West Coast. We were scouting for what we could do, and then came Paris Baguette. They just lined up so well for us as a rising brand that resonates with the current generation.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?KesiReddy: I run a startup in the Bay Area and Sid manages operations for a global company. We realized Paris Baguette vibes very well with our synergies. They are an “ops-ish” restaurant rather than “ops-heavy.” You bake in the morning and sell in the afternoon, so it boils down more to a numbers and strategy problem rather than a time-efficiency problem that most restaurants have. That made it much more comfortable for us to jump into.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?KesiReddy:&nbsp;Before entering this, we were not keen on looking at franchising or the food business at all. Typically, our perception was that franchising involved a lot of red tape and processes that take away freedom from the owner to add their own flavor. Now, I want people to know that franchising can be very attractive if you find a brand that plays to your strengths. Seldom do you find a concept that has processes that actually empower you, help you run it right, and push towards higher revenues and profit margins. Paris Baguette has a unique combination of making the kitchen and the front of the store run as two independent operations, taking away most of the complexity of a restaurant.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?KesiReddy:&nbsp;They were not one of those old-school brands stuck with lots of processes; they were flexible and quick in responding. What excites me most is the branding and the presence the brand has with Gen Z and millennials. Also, the flexibility the team had to understand our unique location was nice to have. I could just text my construction manager and have her fly in to help us out; I don’t see that happening often with other franchise brands.1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?KesiReddy:&nbsp;We want it to be one of the top-performing stores. Our goal is to make Bellevue a top-quartile store for Paris Baguette. We are already looking at expansion in the next fiscal year. You’ll see another store open in the Bothell/Woodinville region, and there is more to come.&nbsp;1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?KesiReddy:&nbsp;Having a brand that has an appetite to grow is very important when you have similar ambitions. Most brands look at their franchisees through a single lens, but there are a thousand variables that make every location unique. Having an ear to listen to the story and being flexible while working toward a common goal is very important, and that is what Paris Baguette gave us. We navigated through the curveballs of construction and permits to launch our first store in three months, which the corporate team challenged us on, saying it would take six to eight. We’re excited to keep that momentum going.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?KesiReddy:&nbsp;The power of a franchise is the process, the setup, and the safety net that comes with it. For a first-time business owner, there are very few things to figure out because there is always someone you can call and ask a question. There are many other franchisees who have been through similar situations. That mentorship is very important.
