What do you want us to know?Waleed Liaqat: I was really looking for something that had a nice ambiance and a great product. I looked at different businesses and franchises. I was studying business and always wanted to become an entrepreneur. I talked to my partner, who owned multiple businesses — convenience stores, small shops — but he never owned a restaurant. So we started looking at different concepts. When I went to the full store in Wichita, I loved it. I started doing more research. Who would have thought that after a year, we would own the rights to open a store in Plano? We wanted to bring it to this area because it has a very diverse population. I’ve lived in Dallas for a couple of years, and I thought it’d be a good choice. This town really needed something like this.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Liaqat: Previously, I worked in different pharmaceutical companies, managing operations. I worked in both small and big companies. Eventually, I moved more toward strategic consulting. From there, I stumbled upon this opportunity.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you’re in it?Liaqat: It’s all about your risk appetite — how much risk you want to take. Ideally, I would’ve started something from scratch, but when we looked at different ideas, I realized I wasn’t ready to fly completely on my own. I wanted something with a little less risk. That’s why we thought franchising would be a better route. Another thing was how quickly we could grow. With Paris Baguette, the brand is growing fast, and I knew it was a unique opportunity. I feel blessed that I stumbled upon this, and I think, with the company growing so quickly, we can grow alongside it.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about the company?Liaqat: I wanted something with a unique offering and the bandwidth to grow. The store build-out was really nice. Honestly, I stumbled upon Paris Baguette by chance. A friend told me he went to this really nice bakery and everybody loved it. Once I saw the location, it was very appealing. After that, I spoke with different franchisees — they all had positive things to say about corporate. Then I moved on to the third stage and talked to corporate, and they were very professional and very fair. That’s when I knew this was the route we wanted to take.1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?Liaqat: Ideally, we want to grow with the brand and eventually move into other cities and states. But first, we’re going to focus on this first store and make sure the foundation is really strong so we can take the next leap forward.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Liaqat: I wouldn’t have been able to bring this to fruition without the support of my family and my business partner. Their support and confidence meant everything.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Liaqat: Before you even approach corporate, you should have a game plan. Know your market, what you want to do and how you’re going to achieve that. Don’t just figure it out later — that’s not a good way to approach it. We had a plan from the start. We decided who was going to do what. I see a lot of partnerships struggle because there’s no delegation of labor. It’s a lot of work. Honestly, I was skeptical when I learned someone from Sacramento would be helping me in the Fresno market, but I was pleasantly surprised. They know every street, every development, and the brokers in town. It’s still the franchisee’s responsibility to work with attorneys and review contracts, but brokers can guide you through signing the contract. So far, we have four agreements, and we’ve worked with these people on each of them. I’ve been very pleased.”The support team stays engaged during this stage to keep the development timeline moving.“We are swiftly growing, and we try our best to minimize the timeline as much as we can to get ahead,” Keith said. “When we know a franchisee is in final lease negotiations, we’ll start to test-fit layouts and begin requesting architectural proposals. Anything we can do concurrently helps our franchise go through the timeline as swiftly as efficiently as possible. The time management piece and our personal guidance throughout the entire process is really important. The hand-in-hand support is what really separates us from other franchises.”When the lease is signed, a construction project manager assists with connecting owners with architects and contractors who have worked on Paris Baguette shops before. Because these partners already understand the brand’s design, it lowers the chance of delays or expensive do-overs.The construction project manager will assist with managing the buildout timeline, from design to equipment sourcing, streamlining the process for the franchisee, guiding and sharing best practices and ways to minimize new cafe opening timeline.&nbsp;“It’s a piece of cake to build the café,” Tulyag said. “They make it so easy.”<h2>Training and Operational Readiness</h2>While the café itself takes shape, franchisees and their core management team — typically four bakers, four cakers, and a general manager&nbsp;are immersed in a four-week training program. The schedule is carefully timed to ensure the team is fully prepared and ready to step in when the café is built and ready to open, without leaving too much time for teams to sit idle as they wait for opening day.This operational support culminates in the arrival of the New Cafe Opening team. This specialized group works on-site for a minimum of 5 days &amp; up to 18 days for new markets and new owners leading up to and following the opening.&nbsp;“We don’t just open the doors and say ‘Good luck,’” Keith said. “The New Café Opening team implements systems, trains the full staff and provides hands-on support during the crucial initial sales period.”For Tulyag, this initial support was invaluable, especially when his café’s volume exceeded expectations.&nbsp; “I was blown away,” he said. “They saw that we needed more than two weeks of additional support. Paris Baguette was there with us, supporting us until we were able to hire additional team members.”<h2>Grand Opening and Long-Term Success</h2>The launch of a new Paris Baguette café is a thoughtful, two-stage process. The journey begins with a soft opening, allowing newly trained team members to perfect operational rhythms and manage guest flow in a controlled environment. This buffer period, which typically lasts two to four weeks, ensures the team is confident and prepared for high volumes.“We want to make sure the team is ready for the grand opening, or any guest appreciation day you wish to host” Keith said. “We also like to give the team a few weeks as a buffer before we invite local dignitaries out to the new café.”Once the team is ready, the official grand opening serves as a major community event, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and invitations to local influencers and city officials.
