Pet Wants, the only national provider of pet food freshly delivered to customers, takes pride in the diversity of its franchisee network. In honor of Black History Month, Pet Wants is highlighting the success stories of some of its Black franchise owners. Benjamin King, the owner of Pet Wants of Johns Creek, for example, is a dedicated entrepreneur with a rich background in brand marketing and a passionate advocate for nutrition. Since opening his Pet Wants franchise nearly five years ago, King has continued to grow his business by an impressive average of 20% annually.

Before embarking on his Pet Wants journey, King spent nearly two decades at a global sporting goods company, honing his skills in the brand marketing department.

“My wife and I also managed a home services franchise she started,” he said. “During this period, I pursued a health coach certification, driven by my passion for nutrition, and I knew I wanted to pursue some entrepreneurial venture in that realm.”

This interest in leveraging nutrition to aid others took a personal turn when one of King’s dogs was diagnosed with liver cancer.

“I was already looking for health opportunities to help my two-legged friends, so when one of my dogs got sick, I knew that nutrition was really the catalyst to everything,” said King. “What could I do to help make her feel better and prolong her life? Maybe I could focus on nutrition for the four-legged folks too.”

His search led him to Pet Wants, a brand that mirrored his beliefs in the power of nutrition. Intrigued by the brand's story and impressed by the results of their products on his own dogs, King saw an opportunity to merge his passion for nutrition with his entrepreneurial spirit.

"I was drawn to the product's freshness and the brand's commitment to no additives or preservatives,” said King. “After further discussions and realizing the lower start-up costs.”

Since opening his franchise in April of 2019, King has not only managed to scale his business consistently but has also established a significant presence at local farmers markets. These markets have been instrumental in building trust within the community, allowing King to share his knowledge and passion for pet nutrition.

“I love getting to meet and talk to people,” said King. “From those experiences, I’ve built a reputation. Pet owners come to me for nutrition advice; they know I am upfront, honest and knowledgeable. It's been a blessing.”

Now, with the backing of the brand’s proven business model and expert corporate team, King plans to expand his footprint with a retail storefront.

“The team is easy to talk to; they are genuine and they don’t see you as just a number to meet a quota,” King said. “That stems from the inclusivity of the original founders. They really laid the foundation of support for all franchise owners.”

Looking forward, King is excited about the potential to educate and assist more pet owners, while building a legacy for his family.

Pet Wants is seeking qualified, passionate franchisee candidates like King in markets across the U.S., starting with Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Missouri, Idaho, Texas and Arizona.
