Retail investors sent Wendy's shares soaring as Reddit fueled optimism around new leadership, turnaround potential and buyout speculation, despite the burger chain's recent sales struggles.
Wendy's shares surged more than 25% on Wednesday, according to Yahoo Finance, followed by another jump in pre-market trading Thursday, after the fast-food chain became the latest company to attract a wave of retail investor enthusiasm on Reddit's r/WallStreetBets forum. Investors pointed to several potential catalysts, including new executive leadership, plans to close underperforming restaurants, international expansion in China, and speculation that the company could eventually be taken private by activist investor Nelson Peltz's Trian Fund Management.
The rally comes despite Wendy's recent operational struggles. The burger chain has reported declining same-store sales since early 2025, with comparable sales falling 5.5% last quarter.
Much of that optimism centers on recently appointed CEO Bob Wright and newly named CFO Steve Cirulis, who previously worked together to lead Potbelly through a significant turnaround. During their tenure, Potbelly's share price increased by more than 500%, while average unit volumes, restaurant margins and returns on invested capital all improved substantially before the sandwich chain was acquired by RaceTrac in late 2025. Investors hope the pair can replicate that success at Wendy's.
Adding to the speculation is Nelson Peltz, whose investment firm Trian Fund Management has built Wendy's largest shareholder position with more than 30 million shares. Reuters reported that Peltz is exploring raising capital to potentially take Wendy's private.
While the viral stock rally may ultimately prove temporary, it underscores the growing importance of leadership credibility, turnaround narratives and investor confidence in today's franchise landscape. Publicly traded franchisors are increasingly being evaluated not only on current sales performance, but also on the perceived strength of their executive teams, strategic direction and ability to unlock long-term value.
