Shuckin’ Shack, the 18-unit oyster bar franchise, is looking to expand its presence in the Carolinas with a new location in Sumter, South Carolina. Born in Carolina Beach, North Carolina, Shuckin’ Shack has built a strong presence in the Carolinas and is known and loved by communities throughout the states. Now, the brand is looking to grow roots in Sumter to make itself even more accessible for loyal guests.

“People know us in the Carolinas, and Sumter is another market that we can enter to ‘bridge the gap’ between our existing locations,” said CEO Jonathan Weathington. “We know that the Shuckin’ Shack model is well-received in the Carolinas, and we’re excited to begin developing in the Sumter area with the right local entrepreneur.”

In addition to guests’ enduring love for Shuckin’ Shack in the Carolinas, Weathington said that Sumter is home to an incredibly diverse community that will enjoy the laid-back, welcoming atmosphere of the Shack.

“Community is what we do, and each of our locations are shaped by the communities they serve,” he said. “Sumter is such a unique place, and we’ll be able to curate an awesome experience that really resonates with our guests.”

This approach to business informs the brand’s development strategy. For its growth in Sumter, Shuckin’ Shack is specifically looking to work with a local entrepreneur. Weathington explained that strong Franchise Owners are likely already participating in their communities through local organizations and events. Ownership with Shuckin’ Shack is just another way for them to further this mission.

Focusing on the people side of the franchise first, the Shuckin’ Shack team’s priority is to identify the right-fit owner. From there, they will be flexible, working with the Franchise Owner to identify prime neighborhoods and select real estate for the new restaurant.

“If a prospective owner is already active in their community, it is a good indicator of alignment with our values and an ability to run the Shuckin’ Shack business in a meaningful way,” Weathington said. “Once this person is identified, we can work together to determine which areas within the Burlington market will be the best fit.”

Because of the strong market potential, Weathington said the new Sumter location can likely be opened within a year. As they work toward identifying the right franchise partner, the Shuckin’ Shack team will visit the Sumter market to meet with and further explore the opportunity with potential owners.
