Wild Birds Unlimited’s whimsical seed characters are a fun addition to any bird feeding station—and the perfect holiday gift for bird lovers.

Seed characters, which are made exclusively for Wild Birds Unlimited, consist of tightly-packed, bird-friendly ingredients that are molded into whimsical creatures. The characters—including Preston the Penguin, Buttons the Snowman, Rascal the Raccoon and Hoot the Owl. Seed characters keep birds at the feeder a little longer because birds have to work to remove the seeds, nuts and more—adding a few extra moments of enjoyment for avid birdwatchers.
Seed characters can also help bird lovers attract many of their favorite birds, including chickadees, woodpeckers and goldfinches, into their backyard.
Jennifer Chrudimsky, Store Manager of the Wasau, Wisconsin Wild Birds Unlimited location and daughter of franchisee Lori Schubring, couldn’t say enough great things about the popular seed characters. “They’re always the No. 1 seller because people really like how cute they are,” said Chrudimsky. “They’re very whimsical, and are also attractive because they come in at a few different price points depending on how much you’re interested in spending.”
Many stores offer seed characters pre-wrapped on reusable feeders that can be replenished with a new character at any time. “If people don’t want to make a really big investment, we have a lower and higher priced feeder,” said Chrudimsky. “People look forward to buying refills every year.”
Chrudimsky went on to say that the most popular characters right now at her store are the raccoon and the owl. “We do often run out, that’s how popular they are,” said Chrudimsky. For the winter months, Wild Birds Unlimited stores typically carry a few limited-edition seasonal characters as well. "We stock so many options all the time, so we typically alternate with our seasonal favorites. Last year we had the penguin, and this year we’re carrying the snowman,” said Chrudimsky.
Because they’re easily refillable, seed characters are a gift that keeps on giving. “People come in for Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays and more to buy refills because they know their friend or loved one already has the feeder,” said Chrudimksy. “Customers buying them as gifts also often buy one for themselves. They’re just too cute to resist!”
