Strategic Franchising Systems, the franchisor behind the robust portfolio of brands — Pet Wants, Fresh Coat, Growth Coach, Caring Transitions and TruBlue — has carved a unique niche in the franchising world by offering aspiring entrepreneurs from all walks of life and backgrounds the opportunity to take charge of their destiny, overcome their fears and start a franchise business in some of today’s hottest service industries.
Achieve Greater Work-Life Balance and Flexibility
Each brand under the SFS umbrella offers a distinct service, yet all are united in their commitment to supporting franchisees in finding an ideal equilibrium between professional ambition and personal life??. This balance is not a mere happenstance but has been deliberately designed that way by Strategic Franchising Systems.
Every SFS brand starts off home-based, for example, which allows for greater flexibility and also keeps start-up costs much lower than those of competitors. This enables a larger pool of prospective franchisees to immerse themselves in the daily operations of their business while also allowing ample time for family and personal pursuits.
“A franchise gives the buyer the best of both worlds,” said Dan Murphy, Executive VP and Chief Marketing Officer of Strategic Franchising Systems. “You are still 100% an independent business owner, controlling your own destiny. But with a good franchise system, you get incredible training and proven operating and marketing systems out of the gate…a solid safety net and risk reduction. You can also start serving customers immediately, getting cash flowing early and often. With successful franchise owners already in the system, it’s not a matter of if you can be successful, but will you be successful? You can follow the same mindsets, habits and work ethic of the top performers to build an incredible business to whatever size that best meets your goals and lifestyle. It’s your choice, opportunity and responsibility.”
Brian Denny, for example, is a Fresh Coat Painters franchisee in Dayton, Ohio who originally signed on with the residential and commercial painting brand to take back more of his time. Denny's journey began in the retail sector, working long hours and weekends for larger companies. However, a stint with a competitor paint franchise changed his perspective.
“I originally learned about the painting business in a commercial sales role,” said Denny. “It had never really crossed my mind to be a business owner. I had always worked for bigger retail companies, but working for a small business and knowing the owner personally, I saw the lifestyle, the flexibility and the rewards that came with being an entrepreneur.”
Denny officially opened his Fresh Coat Painters of South Dayton in 2017. Since then, he has grown the business to include two territories that cover over 15 cities in the area. Nowadays, Denny says he maintains a reliable 9-5 schedule — something that was missing in his life before.
“I have small kids at home, so I feel very fortunate that I can stick to a pretty strict 40-hour work week,” said Denny. “Very rarely do I have to work weekends and nights anymore. The schedule is similar to a normal job, but maintaining that entrepreneurial lifestyle is a constant focus of mine — I bought a business, not a job. I am constantly working towards making sure the business can run seamlessly without me. Fresh Coat allows me to achieve that lifestyle.”
The Freedom and Support to Follow Your True Passion
The cornerstone of Strategic's success lies in its support. The team provides comprehensive training, marketing assistance and operational guidance, ensuring that franchisees are never alone in their entrepreneurial journey. This support system is pivotal, as it empowers franchisees to focus on growth without being bogged down by the minutiae of business management.
“Most entrepreneurs, myself included, crave one value more than others…freedom. They start businesses, including franchises, because they want freedom of time and schedule to have the flexibility to work when they want,” said Murphy. “They also want the freedom to make as much money as possible by providing great value to customers.”
Similarly, Murphy says SFS understands that entrepreneurs also want the freedom to pursue something they are truly passionate about.
Trey Cahill, a Pet Wants franchisee in Cookeville, Tennessee, is one such passion-driven franchise owner. Cahill spent most of his career in software development before he and his wife came across a new calling.
“We were looking for better treats and food for our two Goldendoodles — Memphis and Roan,” said Cahill. “We weren’t very happy about the options we had around that time. That is when we started looking into the Pet Wants franchise opportunity.”
The Cahill couple officially opened their Pet Wants location at the start of 2022 and say the most rewarding part of the business so far has been the ability to be a resource in their community.
“We can guide people to the best foods, show them how to help with certain issues,” he said. “Being able to answer those questions has always been a goal of ours, and it really makes you feel good to help someone take care of their pets. For example, we recently were able to direct someone to a shelter program to help them afford to feed their dogs. We are excited to continue offering that service to our community.”
The Joys of Creating Your Own Destiny
Overall, while Strategic Franchising provides the blueprint, Murphy says the beauty of business ownership is that true success comes down to the individual.
“We have franchise owners who do extremely well and far exceed their revenue and income goals, a majority who pretty much meet their goals and a small percentage who do neither,” he said. “The difference is simple. We live in a land of equal opportunity, not a land of equal results. The level of success achieved always comes down to the individual — the franchise owner — and how open they are to being coached and their personal drive, focus and what lifestyle they strongly desire for themselves and their family. All these personal variables and more determine the size of the business they build. Ultimately, a franchise owner gets the choice and right to determine how smart and hard they work, and how much they want to make. It’s up to them, as it should be.”
With lower startup costs, ongoing demand and an easier barrier to entry, Strategic Franchising offers a pathway to independence, where business ownership is not just a means to an end, but a journey towards personal and professional fulfillment.
“We are a nation of small business owners,” said Murphy. “They are the backbone of our nation and the lifeblood of our economy. With Strategic Franchising, we want to support those ordinary folks looking to follow their entrepreneurial dreams to achieve extraordinary lives with more freedom, flexibility, fun, fulfillment and financial success. We are blessed to do this.”
