While some feel paralyzed by the possibilities of the future, others are empowered by what psychologist Carol Dweck calls “the power of yet.” Dweck, who pioneered in the fields of motivation and the nature of success, applies her educational theories to the workplace by analyzing problem solving and praising techniques. She goes on to explains the infinite value of the “’growth mindset’—the idea that we can grow our brain’s capacity to learn and to solve problems.”
Dweck focuses on optimizing the way in which we break down problems, from students in the classroom to young professionals in the workplace. Illustrated through an anecdote in which she gave 10-year-old students problems seemingly beyond their capabilities, Dweck describes two major methods of addressing problems. Some students reacted with zest (“I love a challenge!), illustrating a “growth mindset.” Others succumbed to a “fixed mindset,” in which they were stunned by their own bewilderment.
Defining these two reactions to problems has given Dweck insight to the methods in which adversity is addressed in the work world. Citing praise, encouragement and an open mind as major elements of mental growth and enrichment, Dweck believes that anyone can acquire a “growth mindset” within the workplace and beyond.
