Last year, in a strategic move to speed up the launch of its HVAC and plumbing category franchise opportunities, multi-brand home services franchisor Threshold Brands purchased Indianapolis-based Plumbing Heating Paramedics, a family-owned and operated plumbing and heating company. Armed with its leadership and expertise, Threshold launched Plumbing Paramedics, along with another spin-off Heating + Air Paramedics, with plans to add 10 franchise markets in 2022.
“We are currently in the perfect position for growth,” said brand president Ryan Carpenter, who sold his family business to Threshold. “We have spent the past 10 years building an operating model that anyone can run with and now we look forward to scaling that model across the country.”
Carpenter founded Plumbing Heating Paramedics in 2011 as a way to close a gap he saw between the customer and the industry. By focusing less on profitability and more on taking care of customers, Plumbing Heating Paramedics quickly became a trusted name within the Indianapolis community, building a reputation for professional and superior service. The brand prides itself on understanding the local areas in which it is located, and believes that knowledge can help it provide customers with the best heating, cooling and plumbing solutions to suit any home’s specific needs, a motto that has carried through to franchise arm of Plumbing Paramedics.
“I saw so many small businesses grow for years and then suddenly plateau, and I knew that franchising was the best way to break through that ceiling,” said Carpenter.
By joining Threshold Brands, the franchisor’s support has allowed Plumbing Paramedics to expand its reach and resources at a critical time as they look to onboard new franchisees. And the partnership is working. Less than three months after announcing franchise opportunities, the brand is already receiving interest from first-time franchise owners and current business owners alike.
“We see a lot of interest both from existing plumbing-business owners who want to convert to a Plumbing Paramedics and first-time business owners who may have worked as plumbers or technicians and want the opportunity to run a business for themselves,” Carpenter said. “We have perfected a streamlined model that allows either candidate to succeed and now, as part of a franchise, they have an additional bench of support behind them.”
That model includes a 170-page manual that details every facet of the brand’s operations. “Most small businesses don’t have anything like that, “ Carpenter said. “It really allows our franchisees to hit the ground running and quickly make a return on their investment.”
Additionally, as a part of Threshold Brands, Plumbing Paramedics can now leverage the franchisor’s comprehensive suite of operational resources, including dedicated operations, coaching and marketing teams.
“Threshold Brands has eight home service brands, which extends our reach substantially,” said Carpenter. “If someone hires Men In Kilts to wash their windows or clean their gutters, that’s a Plumbing Paramedics brand ambassador working with a potential customer who can also offer our services for any plumbing needs in the home. Same goes for any of the other brands.”
Now, Plumbing Paramedics is leveraging that deep pool of resources and referral sources for widespread growth in markets across the country. The brand is embarking on an ambitious growth plan in 2022, aiming to establish over a dozen territories by the end of the year, starting with development in neighboring midwestern states such as Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin.
“The goal of Threshold Brands is to provide a range of services that can meet many needs of the homeowner,” said Scott Sutton, chief growth officer at Threshold Brands. “By doing so, the collective data from the brands provides valuable marketing and operations insights to be shared and leveraged across all brands. With these insights, the Threshold team can work to drive unit-level economics for its franchise owners which provides a huge advantage for all of our franchise owners, including those within Plumbing Paramedics.”
The investment cost to become a franchise owner of Plumbing Paramedics ranges from $102,250 to $205,800.
