TruBlue Home Service Ally, the home maintenance franchise that supports busy adults, has now partnered with Medicaid service providers, offering much-needed minor home modifications (MHMs) to seniors in need. While many seniors prefer to age in place, this is not always a safe option — depending on the state of the home.
“Tragically, my father-in-law fell down the steps and broke his neck,” Sean Fitzgerald, president of TruBlue Home Service Ally, told McKnight’s Home Care Daily Pulse. “He became paraplegic and eventually passed away from the complications. Such a tragic event and, sadly, stories like mine are very common across this country. So I think just creating awareness about [MHMs] and providing some simple solutions can enhance the lives of seniors.”
Through Medicaid, seniors can now use additional funds to have minor updates made to their homes. Though the allowance varies from state to state, an individual beneficiary in Texas, for example, is allowed $7,500 for a lifetime and $300 per year. Simple modifications, like the addition of a grab bar, can be completed by TruBlue Home Service Ally and are eligible for coverage.
Other eligible expenses include lighting, handles on shower heads and floor mats in kitchens and bathrooms. These changes may seem small, at a glance, but they can make a major impact on the safety of a senior’s home.
“[MHMs] are going to play a huge role in keeping people in their homes safer and longer,” Fitzgerald said. “There are so many benefits from it, whether you’re looking at it from an individual standpoint or from a governmental or medical standpoint. I believe that everybody deserves to spend their last days in their home.”
