Wendy's Settles Data Breach Claims for $50 Million

The brand has agreed to pay $50 million to a group of financial institutions as a result of a data breach that occurred in 2015 and 2016.

The Wendy’s Co. has now reached agreements to resolve all of the legal issues that arose following a massive data breach that hit over 1,000 of its restaurants in 2015 and 2016.

According to a recent Restaurant Business article, Wendy’s has agreed to pay a group of financial institutions $50 million to settle claims of negligence on the company’s part in the cyberattack that exposed the credit card information of customers through malware installed on its point-of-sale system. Last year, Wendy’s settled a class-action lawsuit brought by customers affected by the data breach.

Restaurant Business noted that after it exhausts insurance, Wendy’s itself would be on the hook for $27.5 million of the settlement.
