Joshua Tree Experts, the emerging Pennsylvania-based service brand known for its reliable tree care maintenance, plant health care, lawn care and pest control, is growing beyond its home state of Pennsylvania. And the brand sees Massachusetts as the perfect state to do so.

With no current franchisees in the state and wide open availability when it comes to territories, new franchisees have the opportunity to pioneer the growing brand in their local communities while benefiting from being driving distance from Joshua Tree Experts’ headquarters.

“Massachusetts is very closely matched with Pennsylvania as far as what the licensing requirements are for the services that we provide,” said Dylan DeGroat, Director of Franchise Development. “It’s also relatively close to where we are in Pennsylvania, so we can get up there easily when we need to.”

After doing some preliminary research on the market, the Joshua Tree Experts team found that the demographics are a great match. Not only does the state have similar landscape features to where the brand currently operates, but it has an even higher customer profile. Notably, Massachusetts was also named among the top states to open a business in 2022 by Forbes

DeGroat noted that nearly the entire state is available for Joshua Tree Experts territories. In particular, the brand is focusing on areas such as Springfield, Worcester, Boston and the southeastern tip region. In total, there are about eighteen territories in Massachusetts that the brand sees as being very successful and closely related to what it has in Pennsylvania.

What Makes Joshua Tree Experts Unique

When Joshua Tree Experts enters Massachusetts, it will offer unique services that other brands may not. For example, unlike other tree companies, the brand specializes in tree preservation, not just tree removal. Rather than simply removing the trees, Joshua Tree Experts focuses on pruning, reducing and doing as much as possible from the ground. By forgoing additional lifts and heavy equipment, there is less liability that typically comes with having to send employees up into trees.

Joshua Tree Experts is also a three in one brand. Over the course of almost ten years, the brand spent time developing its internal team, infrastructure and customer base. Recognizing the needs of their clients, it eventually expanded offerings to include lawn care services in 2017, establishing it as a separate division. The addition of lawn care was a success, prompting Joshua Tree Experts to expand their services in 2020 by introducing a pest control division.

“We offer three streams of revenue that are actually recurring, rather than just going out to a customer's house cutting their tree down one time and not being able to do anything after that,” said DeGroat.

And unlike other brands on the market, Joshua Tree Experts emphasizes professionalism in everything from equipment to branding to software and its employees. This makes the process easier for clients and franchisees.

“We have over 18 years of experience as a professional company,” added DeGroat. “A lot of other tree companies in most territories are going to be your mom and pop businesses or pop up tree care companies.”

Who the Ideal Franchisee Is

Joshua Tree Experts is looking to expand in Massachusetts as soon as possible over the next year. It is looking for qualified franchisees who are passionate about working with an emerging brand and being a pioneer in their respective markets.

The company has identified two types of franchisees: the wealth builder and the wealth grower. The wealth builder is a candidate who may come from a background in the corporate world or someone who wants to transition into being their own boss. They are probably interested in scaling at a comfortable pace, financing their equipment and starting from a home office. Meanwhile, the wealth grower is someone who might have other business ventures and is looking to build their portfolio. This type of franchisee is likely high net worth and might have a general manager working under them while they handle the investment side of the business.

“Regardless of which profile the franchisee fits, having a strong background in sales or customer service will be highly beneficial,” said DeGroat. “Relationship building is really the focus of our business. Being able to interact with the community and clients is going to help them be able to scale and get their name more pronounced in their community.”
