6. What Is the Market Potential for Backyard Bird-Feeding?

Backyard bird-feeding sits inside a surprisingly large “watch and feed” economy: In 2022, 148.3 million Americans participated in wildlife watching, spending $4.19 billion on commercially prepared wild bird food, $1.60 billion on other bulk foods used to feed wild birds and $1.65 billion on nest boxes, bird houses, feeders and baths — a sturdy baseline that helps specialty retail hold up through normal swings in discretionary spending. Market researchers expect the bird feeder category to keep expanding over the next decade, with the global market projected to grow from about $1.42 billion in 2025 to $2.03 billion by 2035 (a 3.6% CAGR), supported by at-home outdoor hobbies, conservation-minded buying and a steady shift toward upgraded products and e-commerce.

Competitor Analysis

General competitors include pet supply stores, hardware stores and garden centers that sell bird seed and feeders. However, none offer the same specialized knowledge, product quality or conservation-driven mission as Wild Birds Unlimited.
