Through her journey as the owner of a Caring Transitions franchise in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Carolyn Doerr has come to exemplify perseverance. Despite significant personal and professional challenges, she has successfully led her team of 22 employees to notable achievements, including their recent induction into the franchise’s Million Dollar Elite Club.

Doerr’s entrepreneurial journey began in the wake of her husband’s untimely death 13 years ago and her subsequent job layoffs. She faced an additional hurdle with her diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma, a rare cancer affecting smooth muscles in various organs. The battle with cancer has been ongoing, involving multiple rounds of chemotherapy (which were later found to be ineffective for her specific condition) and multiple surgeries, with another scheduled for July 1. Despite these health challenges, Doerr’s strong support system, including her team and family members, has been crucial in maintaining business operations during her absences.

“Fortunately, I have a very strong team that was able to jump in when I couldn’t,” Doerr told Central Penn Business Journal. “My brother and his wife are now working with me as well — kind of as a backup for when needed.”

Under her leadership, the Mechanicsburg franchise has not only joined the Million Dollar Elite Club but has also received awards for being in the top 10 in sales and the Comeback Award for the Northeast Central Region, recognizing the team’s resilience through adversity. In addition, the franchise earned the Shooting Star Award in its first year, ranking among the top 25 of the 215 Caring Transitions offices.

Doerr gives her team credit for the franchise’s success: “They are dedicated and caring individuals who enjoy what they do, and love serving the seniors in our area,” she said. “They work extremely hard, and I am very blessed to have the wonderful group that I do. They are the ones who keep things running smoothly when I have to step away for a bit.”

Established in 2006, Caring Transitions offers services including downsizing, right-sizing, estate sales and online auctions, distinguishing itself with a comprehensive auction site and move management services. This combination provides a one-stop solution for seniors, easing the stress of relocation.

Doerr’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to fully commit to their ventures and be ready for hard work: “Owning a business is definitely not easy. You have to really be dedicated to it,” she said. “Be prepared to put your heart and soul into it. If it isn’t [a passion], it’s probably not the right fit.”
