Families facing the emotional challenge of helping an aging loved one downsize, relocate or settle an estate are rarely searching for the lowest price. They're searching for someone they can rely on during one of life's most stressful transitions. That trust is earned long before a phone call is ever made, which is why Caring Transitions franchisees focus on becoming valued members of the communities they serve.
For Julie Bilyeu, owner of Caring Transitions of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, nearly every client relationship begins with another trusted professional.
“Referrals are an important part of my business, and I’ve been intentional about building a strong network of trusted professionals,” Bilyeu said. “That includes REALTORS®, senior placement specialists and estate attorneys who regularly work with the same families and clients we serve. These relationships have become a valuable part of our overall marketing strategy and help us build trust with people who need our services.”
That referral-driven model reflects the unique role Caring Transitions plays in the senior services ecosystem. Rather than operating independently, franchisees become collaborative partners with senior living communities, elder law attorneys, financial professionals, real estate agents and care providers, all working toward the same goal of helping older adults and their families navigate complex life transitions.
Building Relationships Before They're Needed
Because transitions often happen unexpectedly, families frequently rely on recommendations from professionals they already know. Caring Transitions franchisees invest time in building those relationships well before a family needs assistance.
For Bilyeu, that means consistently showing up and supporting local organizations instead of simply promoting her business.
"Specifically, with my senior living communities, one of the things that we try to do is be present," she said. "The number one thing that we can do is support their efforts. I look at my job as creating solutions. For me, that means supporting other people to create solutions as well. My goal is to support my senior living communities and support the things that they are doing. I always try to be present at their events and knowledgeable about their community, not so much so I am speaking for them, but also to be able to converse on a level with people in a way that shows that I know what I am talking about."
Becoming an Educator for Referral Partners
One way Caring Transitions differentiates itself is by helping educate referral partners who regularly work with seniors but may not fully understand the emotional realities of a late-life move.
Bilyeu has developed educational bus tours for local real estate professionals, for example, introducing them to different types of senior living communities and helping them better understand what their clients experience.
"Senior Real Estate Specialist® is a designation that REALTORS can achieve," she said. "But that really means nothing else other than the fact that they took that test. What we have found is that they really don't understand what this move entails or means for the client."
During the tours, real estate professionals visit independent living communities, assisted living communities, memory care facilities and life plan communities to better understand what seniors are actually transitioning into.
“For real estate professionals, how can it help you understand how your client is going to feel going to that community? It's amazing what we hear from those REALTORS," Bilyeu said.
By sharing knowledge rather than simply seeking referrals, Caring Transitions franchisees strengthen relationships while improving outcomes for seniors throughout the community.
Giving Back Beyond the Business
Community involvement is another defining characteristic of Caring Transitions franchise owners. Bilyeu’s team participates in a Meals on Wheels route every month, for example. "My staff are paid to volunteer to drive that route and deliver those meals," she said. "The other piece is that we always look for opportunities to support our community, whether that is through direct sponsorship, volunteer time or planning our own charity work."
Sometimes those efforts extend well beyond traditional volunteer work. Bilyeu recalls working with an older woman living with dementia whose husband had managed the household finances before passing away. Without support, she was facing bankruptcy and the possibility of losing her home.
Rather than approaching the situation as a typical estate sale, Bilyeu and her team partnered with neighbors to organize a vintage clothing and jewelry sale using the woman's lifelong collection.
"It was so well attended, the proceeds from that completely paid for a down payment for the community they were trying to get her in," Bilyeu said. "We didn't take a commission; we only took our expenses."
A Business Built on Purpose
For Bilyeu, becoming deeply involved in her community is really the reason she chose Caring Transitions in the first place. "The business is great," she said. "It really serves my life's purpose of helping others in transition. It provides me an avenue to continue to be fulfilled, as well as provide for my family."
