Certified Nutritionist Turns Her Attention to the Health of Animals with New Pet Wants Franchise
Former personal trainer and lifelong pet lover transforms her passion for pet health into a thriving Pet Wants franchise, ensuring pets in her community receive the best care and nutrition.
Remington Richerson, a certified personal trainer and nutritionist, has always been passionate about health and well-being — not just for humans, but for pets as well.
After years of pet sitting, boarding and grooming out of her home, Richerson has taken her love for animals to the next level by becoming a Pet Wants franchisee. Driven by her own positive experience with Pet Wants and her desire to provide the best for her beloved English bulldog, she decided to purchase the local franchise when it was at risk of closing down in her community.
Now, as the proud owner of the Pet Wants franchise in Springfield, MO, Richerson is dedicated to educating her community about the importance of quality pet nutrition and helping other pet owners give their furry family members the best possible care.
1851 Franchise spoke with Richerson to learn more about her story, what drew her to Pet Wants and her plans for the future.
1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?
Richerson: I have been a certified personal trainer and nutritionist for humans for years, and did taxes as a 9-to-5. About three years ago, I started pet sitting, boarding and grooming out of my home.
1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?
Richerson: I had looked into franchising — McDonald’s, Taco Bell, etc. — but those didn’t have that personal feel. Pet Wants has that feel. We are all independently owned, and that was exciting to me. It feels like your own store. I’ve been a customer for about four years, and when the former owner was diagnosed with stage four carcinoma, the store was going to close. We had no idea what we were going to do for our dog, who is on a Pet Wants diet. We couldn’t find anything else we trusted, so I decided to go ahead and purchase the franchise.
1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?
Richerson: Hearing how much everyone loved the Pet Wants brand and talking to other owners about how they were supported by the corporation made me realize this was the right choice. Everybody believes in this brand.
1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?
Richerson: I’m currently working on a canine and feline nutritionist certification. I’m excited to provide this community with these products and really teach people how to keep their dogs healthier and happier for longer. I want to rejuvenate this business, which has been open since 2016. My goal is to educate the community, give them the opportunity to try our products, see that they work, and help spread the word to others.
1851: What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?
Richerson: Within the next few months, we are offering grooming services, which is something our community really lacks. I have a hometown hero kind of vibe, and we do charitable initiatives as often as we can.
1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?
Richerson: The upfront costs can seem steep at times, but it really is worth it. People don’t get dogs to give them the bare minimum. This is an investment, and pets are part of the family. Owners want to provide their family with the best on the market.
