Amazon applying for a liquor license was the key clue in uncovering the retailer&rsquo;s plans for the drive through grocery stores it&rsquo;s been rumored to be building in major markets along the west coast. The first store is a 9,700 square-foot building in Seattle. The company is also rumored to be building more in San Francisco and Silicon Valley.

Roger Davidson, a retail food consultant who perused Amazon&rsquo;s plans, called the design for the drive through grocery store &ldquo;amazing.&rdquo; According to the city planning documents, no shopping will be done inside the facilities, but rather all items must be ordered beforehand online.

&quot;They&#39;ve designed this facility so that it&#39;s super efficient, so they&#39;re going to be more competitive on costs and labor,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I bet you can put in an order and have it in 30 minutes the way it&#39;s arranged.&quot;
