PMQ: Despite Lack of Restaurant Experience, This Crust Pizza Franchisee Went All In — And Nailed It

Fernanda and Austin Collins took a leap of faith and opened a Crust Pizza Co. franchise in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with the support of the brand's founders.

Fernanda and Austin Collins, franchisees of Crust Pizza Co. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, found their entrepreneurial journey in an unexpected way. While living in The Woodlands, Texas, they frequently enjoyed dining at Crust Pizza Co. Their love for the pizza and atmosphere sparked a joking idea to open their own location after relocating to Baton Rouge. When they learned that Crust Pizza Co. was franchising, they took the idea seriously and eventually opened a store with the support of the brand's founders.

“One of the reasons we felt really confident moving forward with Crust, despite not having [restaurant] experience, was just because it’s a franchise, and they gave us all the support,” Fernanda told PMQ Pizza. “They told us what steps we need to take, what we need to do, what we need to buy, who we need to hire — they even helped with the real estate selection. That was really helpful, having them in the background guiding us every step of the way.”

After over a year in operation, their location has flourished, leading Fernanda to consider expanding with a second location.

Crust Pizza Co.’s appeal lies in its family-friendly atmosphere and Chicago tavern-style pizza, which drew the Collins family to the brand initially. Their restaurant now serves as a gathering spot for families, with amenities like an outdoor patio, games and special promotions, while also catering to various diners, from children to older patrons. This welcoming environment, paired with delicious food, has helped their business thrive.
