Memphis Business Journal: Papa Murphy's zeroes in on Memphis expansion

The take-and-bake pizza concept has found success in the Memphis area and now seeks to expand the brand by offering franchisees an incentive.

Papa Murphy's is making good on their promise to rapidly expand in the Memphis market with six corporate owned locations currently under development in the area.

Despite competition in the segment, the brand believes Memphis is ripe for expansion targeting Papa Murphy's main customers: busy families.

“Doing pizza differently within that $40 billion category, we think is an opportunity that gives us some headroom in markets like Memphis, despite the proliferation of other brands,” Papa Murphy's vice president of franchise sales Gary Payne told the publication.

To ensure accelerated growth, Papa Murphy's is running an ad campaign in the market as well as offering potential franchisees a financial incentive to sign a multi-unit deal, which includes a reduced franchise fee and a royalty waiver for the first year in business.

“We have seen that program generate the types of results that we are looking for in terms of building brand awareness ahead of the store densities,” Payne said. “Obviously, we seeded the market there with company store development. We are looking for franchise partners to help us capitalize on the initial brand building in the Memphis area.”
