Famous Toastery Is Ready To Close Out the North Carolina Market Through Franchising

The better-breakfast franchise is targeting cities like Charlotte, Ashville, Boone, Winston-Salem/Greensboro/High Point, Raleigh-Durham, Fayetteville, Jacksonville, Wilmington and Greenville for franchise growth.

The better-breakfast franchise Famous Toastery has major plans over the next year to grow in its founding state of North Carolina. Since its inception in 2005 in Huntersville, N.C., the concept has steadily grown throughout the Southeast. Now, the brand is circling back to North Carolina as population growth and increased consumer demand creates an opportunity to add multiple locations and close out the state.

The brand has built a strong reputation across the Charlotte area and has been consistently awarded the top breakfast-and-brunch spot for the three corporate-owned locations. From its one-of-a-kind “every server is your server” mentality to its scratch kitchen, Famous Toastery is focused on healthier menu trends and listening to consumers with the recent launch of its online ordering platform. The brand is leading the better-breakfast sector, perfecting the formula for franchise success by bringing in franchisees that are excited about the brand and understand how to run restaurants efficiently and how to execute top-notch service at their location.

"We already have a lot of restaurants in Charlotte and in towns throughout the state, but we really see an opening to keep growing our presence in our home market," said Famous Toastery CEO and Founder Robert Maynard. "Our growth has been substantial in North Carolina for five years, and due to COVID-19, it has dramatically increased as more people move to the area. Huntersville, where Brian Burchill and I opened our first Famous Toastery, has more than doubled in population since 2010, creating a demand for more breakfast spots in town."

Since the 2010 Census, North Carolina’s population has grown by 952,000 residents, an increase of 10%. Two-thirds or 67% of this growth was due to net in-migration, meaning more individuals moving to North Carolina than moving away. In addition, North Carolina has been ranked by Forbes as the best state to start a new business for three years in a row due to its low labor costs and incoming business investment. Coupled with population growth, the state presents new opportunities that weren't present a decade ago.

"There are a lot of young professionals migrating to the Carolinas. The region is a great place to raise a family because of its mild climate and affordability. Compared to other states in U.S., North Carolina is more affordable when it comes to buying a house and offers a valued work-life balance," said Maynard.

Famous Toastery has opened 26 locations across the Southeast, including 18 in its home state. Maynard chose the Carolinas to expand in for many reasons. Not only has Famous Toastery built brand familiarity over the years, but North Carolina also has prime customer demographics — with the population steadily increasing, there is a continued demand for quality breakfast and lunch options in the state. In addition, prospective franchise owners in North Carolina benefit from the close proximity to Famous Toastery’s headquarters in Charlotte.

We’ve been able to provide a lot of assistance to franchisees during the pandemic, whether it be help with staffing, safety procedures or PPE,” said Maynard. “Having our restaurants be in the same area as our headquarters is a huge reason we are able to provide that level of hands-on support. Too often, franchise systems find success early and decide to expand too quickly out of their primary market. We noticed quickly that we had a formula that works in North Carolina, right in our own backyard, and we are doubling down on that formula to provide franchisees with a proven infrastructure. We’ve been excited to grow the brand with more and more customers requesting additional locations, and more and more franchise partners who want to join our lifestyle brand.”

Stacy White, a multi-unit Famous Toastery franchisee in North Carolina, has continued to grow since opening her first location in Mooresville in 2015. “We were actually the first franchise to open under the Famous Toastery name instead of Toast,” she said. “In 2018 we opened our second Mooresville location. Our area offers the perfect consumer demographics, which has allowed us to expand in the area. We have guests who come in every single day. Also, since we are so close to the corporate team, Maynard was the one who helped us negotiate with landlords and has helped us grow since day one.”

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Famous Toastery has continued to open new locations across North Carolina. “We recently opened our Denver, North Carolina and Blowing Rock, North Carolina locations this fall,” said Maynard. “Both have already seen success. We also have another restaurant opening in Concord, North Carolina in December.”

The breakfast concept is planning to add new locations by the end of 2020 with a focus on Charlotte, Ashville, Boone, Winston-Salem/Greensboro/High Point, Raleigh-Durham, Fayetteville, Jacksonville, Wilmington and Greenville.

Since its modest beginnings in 2005, Famous Toastery has grown into a leader in the better-breakfast segment of the restaurant franchising sector. As it continues to grow in North Carolina and nationwide, its commitment to fresh ingredients and home-style service has stayed constant, reinforcing the brand's reputation as a quality breakfast spot and an exciting franchise opportunity.
