For Ravi Sandhu, entrepreneurship runs in the family. His father, Beant Sandhu, spent over 30 working as a mechanical engineer while also serving as a Subway franchisee. Growing up, Ravi witnessed both the challenges and rewards of running a business. His father recently retired and now, after a decade in tech, Ravi is following in his footsteps by joining him in the world of franchising with Right at Home*, a brand that aligns with their values and provides compassionate care for seniors. Inspired by their own experiences and motivated by the growing need for senior care, the Sandhus are now ready to make a positive impact on the lives of seniors in their community.

1851 Franchise spoke with Ravi to learn more about their story, their journey to Right at Home and their plans for the future.

1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?

Ravi Sandhu: My father, Beant Sandhu, was a mechanical engineer, but after leaving that field, he wanted to give back to the community. He’s also been an entrepreneur for over 30 years, owning several small businesses, and that’s something my whole family has been accustomed to. I’ve been working in tech in the Bay Area for the last 10 years, but I loved the idea of entering into a business with my parents. Growing up, I saw the ups and downs of running a business, but also how rewarding it can be.

1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?

Ravi: All of my dad’s businesses were franchises, so we’ve seen how successful the concept can be when you align with a brand that truly cares about its franchisees. Every franchise operates differently, so it’s important to find the right fit. That’s something I want people to understand — there are great franchises out there, but you have to find the one that fits your goals and values.

1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?

Ravi: Right at Home stood out because they genuinely care about both their clients and their franchisees. Their vetting process was thorough, and they are very protective of their brand. Plus, after talking to other franchisees, we saw that they had a great volume of business, so it was a proven concept. It’s also personal for us — my mom’s mother dealt with Parkinson’s and we had caretakers who would come to help her. Seeing the relief they provided was eye-opening. We wanted to be a part of something like that and make a difference in our community.

1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?

Ravi: Our goal is to grow, bring on more caregivers and serve the needs of the elderly population here in Visalia. From there, we want to expand into other territories in the future and continue to provide care for those in need.

1851: What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?

Ravi: My dad came to the U.S. in his early 20s from India. He came from a hard-working farming background and brought those values of hard work, integrity and community with him. He’s instilled those values in me, and they are what drive us to this day. We want to give back to the community and provide the best care possible.

1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?

Ravi: Network as much as you can — talk to other franchisees and learn from their experiences. When you’re starting out, it can feel like you’re navigating in the dark, but hearing from people on the ground can really open your eyes to what day-to-day life is like. That’s what helped us make our decision.
