Though green building and design is increasingly seen as essential for commercial building in the U.S., the growing demand for eco-friendly residential homes has largely been unmet. Now, <a href="https://ghbuildersusa.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=green-home-builders-usa-brings-one-of-australias-fastest-growing-franchise-models-stateside-2713590" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">one of Australia’s most successful building franchises</a> has arrived in the U.S. to fill that gap.In the early 2000s, <a href="https://1851franchise.com/greenhomebuildersusa/green-home-builders-usa-executive-qa-with-ceo-mick-fabar-2713587#franchisor">Australian home developer Mick Fabar </a>saw an opportunity in his market to deliver the same eco-friendly design considerations that were being applied in commercial buildings to residential homes. The prevailing thinking, both then and now, is that green building is too expensive to apply to residential homes, and home buyers won’t pay for it. That thinking, Fabar wagered, relies on a couple of essential miscalculations. The first is the assumption that homeowners don’t care enough about the environmental impact of their homes and green design is therefore purely a theoretical luxury, not something that directly affects their lives. The second assumption is that green building is more expensive for the homeowner than traditional design. Fabar quickly proved both of those assumptions false — though they persist stubbornly throughout much of the industry — and his building work skyrocketed as a result.&nbsp;By 2006, Fabar was building and selling 20–30 homes per year, a volume that would require a full business to sustain. That’s when he founded Green Homes Australia. Since then, the business has continued to grow year after year, eventually turning to franchising and expanding out into markets across Australia. In 2015, Green Homes established its first international franchise network with Green Homes New Zealand. Three years later, the ever-expanding franchise made its second foray into international expansion, planting a flag in the U.S. and establishing <a href="1851franchise.com/greenhomebuildersusa" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Green Home Builders USA</a>.“No matter where we set up shop, we see a ton of excitement,” said Josh Hughes, Green Home Builders Operations Manager. “And not just from franchisees and prospective buyers. “Suppliers, builders, vendors, consumers —&nbsp;everyone wants to get involved.”What accounts for that excitement? You want a home where it is easy to breath, safe to raise your kids, comfortable and efficient. People understand that an eco-friendly home is a happier place to live.”As for the price tag, Hughes says Green Home Builders has designed a host of sustainable solutions for customers with a range of budgets, but even the higher upfront costs are often recouped through energy savings and resales.&nbsp;“We work with plenty of budget-conscious customers, whether they are investing in their very first home or downsizing to a tiny home,” Hughes said. “And of course we’ll work with high-end one-off architectural projects as well. But the key is, regardless of the budget, when you are buying a home, you are making a long term investment, and the idea that buyers who are in a place to make such an investment aren’t going to do the research and figure out the long-term costs and savings is just wrong. If people have an opportunity where they might pay a little more upfront but they can see clearly how they can make that money back through energy efficiency and resale value, they are going to take it.”By identifying and responding to those misconceptions about green building and home buyers, Green Home Builders has carved out an enviable role as the largest green builder in the residential market. “It’s very rare that someone comes along and dramatically alters or opens up a new marketplace,” Hughes points out, “and that’s exactly what we’ve done.”That adds up to a major opportunity for franchisees, particularly in the U.S., where Green Home Builders is just beginning to pursue the kind of growth it has enjoyed in Australia and New Zealand.Traditionally, one of major hurdles for developers getting into green building and design is that the standards, resources and information are largely inaccessible. “It’s almost like legal jargon,” Hughes said, “if you aren’t trained to read a contract, it won’t make any sense to you.” One of Green Home Builders’ key innovations is collecting and breaking down everything there is to know about green building and design in a way that makes sense to laypeople.“We’ve built a system that allows us to take a builder who has zero experience in green building, and with just a week’s training, equip them with everything they need to know so that they could go to a conference with clients and explain every detail of what we do,” Hughes said.That accessibility has allowed Green Home Builders to open up their opportunity to <a href="https://1851franchise.com/greenhomebuildersusa/how-julie-and-graeme-saward-followed-their-passion-and-became-the-first-franchisees-to-partner-with-green-homes-australia-2713588#brand-latest-stories">a wide range of prospective franchisees</a> who otherwise might not have had a clear path into green building and design.Because the franchise opportunity does not require specialized knowledge in green building and design, Louis Fennell, Green Home Builders Marketing Manager, says the franchise’s development team is primarily interested in franchisee candidates whose personal and professional values align with the brand.“We want people who have a drive to make decisions that have a positive impact on both their business and their community,” Fennell said. “We don’t want people who are out there building homes that last for ten years then going back in ten years to sell upgrades or a new home.
