For Brett and Nicole Myhre, young parents from Anoka County, Minnesota, the pandemic has been particularly tough. Since the beginning of lockdown, the couple lost their three living grandparents due to a variety of causes. One of which was Brett’s grandmother, who was quarantined in a nursing home and was unable to hold her newborn great-granddaughter, born in 2020.

The tragedy helped crystallize something for the pair. Nicole, a hairstylist, and Brett, a graphic designer, decided they wanted careers that were more personally fulfilling. They wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, especially people like their own grandparents.

Today, the Myhres are the newest franchise owners with Griswold Home Care, the 168-unit in-home care franchise that has been helping seniors achieve better health, comfort and happiness for nearly 40 years.

“This year was a year of reflection for a lot of people,” said Brett. “Nicole and I decided we wanted to try something new in our professional lives. And during the last year, we became really passionate about the importance of in-home care.”

This will mark the first Griswold Home Care franchise in the Minneapolis area. Dr. Jean Griswold launched the business in 1982 as the first franchised home care business. The company has maintained its founder’s profound sense of empathy for older and disabled adults and those living with chronic conditions, growing into one of the most respected providers in the industry.

“We love the history of Griswold and their mission,” said Brett. “We’re excited to bring this service to an area that is quite underserved in terms of quality in-home care.”

The couple began thinking about the career switch when lockdowns kept Nicole from her salon. Though it was a tough period, it gave her a chance to think about what she really wanted to do with her life.

“Upon reflection about my career as a hairstylist, I realized I had a lot more space in my heart to help people in other ways as well,” she said. “I’m really passionate about supporting people and making them feel better about themselves. And if you can help people remain in their homes rather than a facility, you’re allowing them to maintain their dignity and happiness overall.”

Griswold Home Care provides services so that adults can maintain quality of life despite advanced age or onset of illness through services including companion care, home services, personal care and respite care.

The Myhres learned about the brand through a friend who is a Griswold franchisee and thought their desire to help people made them the right fit for the brand. Upon that introduction, the husband and wife duo quickly began digging into the brand’s history to learn more.

“We decided to sign with Griswold because during our first phone call with the team, they spoke at length to the mission and Dr. Jean Griswold’s story, which made a big impact on us,” said Brett. “A few other franchise companies we spoke with talked about numbers and profit. That didn’t really resonate with us.”

In order to get started, the Myhres did a lot of research to immerse themselves with the brand, but they felt they were given the support they needed when they signed on with Griswold. “Having never been involved with a franchise before, this was all new to us,” said Nicole. “Their six-step process was really wonderful. It felt really comfortable having a guideline of what to expect.”

“I can’t think of a more fitting couple to join our team,” said Griswold Home Care’s CEO Michael Slupecki. “We’re pretty selective when awarding franchises, and we try to find those that encompass ‘griswoldness.’ That’s what we call folks who want to make a difference, give back to their communities and have a high degree of empathy. Nicole and Brett checked all of those boxes. We admired them taking an unfortunate life event and turning it into something positive. We’re thrilled to have them break into the Greater Minneapolis market as it is one of our targets for future growth.”

The couple expects to open their first location in 2021 and is already scouting territories for a second location to open soon after.
