Innovation in home services doesn't always come from inventing a new product. Sometimes it comes from rethinking how customers receive service and giving franchise owners a better way to build a business. Screenmobile has spent decades doing exactly that.

While the company built its reputation repairing and replacing window and door screens, it has evolved into a broader outdoor living business offering motorized screens, patio enclosures, retractable shading systems and other lifestyle-enhancing products. Combined with a mobile service model and investments in technology that improve both the customer and franchisee experience, the brand continues finding new ways to modernize a category that has traditionally remained fragmented.

A Mobile Business Built to Scale

Screenmobile's innovation starts with its business model. Rather than requiring franchisees to operate from a traditional storefront, the company equips them with mobile service vehicles that allow technicians to complete many jobs at a customer's home the same day. That convenience aligns with changing consumer expectations while giving franchisees a lower-overhead model they can grow by adding trucks, trailers and territories as demand increases.

For Screenmobile, growth is designed to happen in stages, giving franchisees a way to add capacity as demand increases rather than taking on the costs of a fully built-out operation from the start.

“Scalability is the No. 1 factor for us,” said Clint Rowley, brand president of Screenmobile. “We don't want our franchisees to buy a job. We want them to buy an enterprise and build a legacy that can become as large as they want it to be. We allow them to scale by adding additional territories as they hit certain benchmarks, but we also have a system that lets them grow rapidly as business comes in the door. They can add new trucks, new trailers and the equipment they need. It's almost like building with LEGO bricks. You get to one level, then you add the next level, and then the next."

Franchisees can start with the equipment and territory they need, then add trucks, trailers or additional territory as the workload increases. That makes it possible to grow without taking on the expense of a larger operation before the business is ready.

Expanding Beyond Traditional Screen Repair

Screen repair remains central to the business, but Screenmobile has been giving franchisees more ways to serve homeowners. The brand looked to its strongest locations and found that larger outdoor living projects could bring in higher-value work while addressing demand for more usable patios, porches and other indoor-outdoor spaces.

"We've made a really big push to change some of the core aspects of what Screenmobile has been for decades," Rowley said. "We were known as a screen company. We fixed window screens and screen doors, and that's still part of our DNA. We're not moving away from that. But as we've analyzed our top-performing locations, we've looked at what helps them go from good to great. A lot of that has been expanding the products we offer and pursuing larger-ticket projects. We're helping people create screened-in porches and patios they can enjoy year-round, installing large motorized roll-down screens that provide shade, privacy or insect protection and screening in garage doors so homeowners can keep the garage open while still enjoying privacy and airflow."

The broader product lineup gives franchisees access to larger outdoor living jobs without pulling them away from the repair work that built the brand. It also creates more room to grow within an existing territory as homeowners take on bigger projects.

Using Technology to Strengthen Customer Relationships

Technology also plays an increasingly important role in how Screenmobile operates, though much of its innovation happens behind the scenes. The company has invested in digital communication tools that allow franchisees to stay connected with customers before, during and after each project. From automated follow-up communications to digital job tracking and invoicing, the system helps create a smoother customer experience while encouraging repeat business.

The next step is turning each installation into the beginning of an ongoing service relationship rather than a one-time transaction.

"We want to be able to create complete home audits so we have a digital record of every home's screens and products," Rowley said. "Eventually, we'd like the system to predict future maintenance needs. It might tell us certain screens will likely need replacement in three years or that a motorized screen should be serviced annually. The system would automatically remind both us and the customer when it's time. It allows franchisees to maintain the products they've installed, protect product warranties and stay in front of customers by providing routine service that most homeowners would otherwise neglect."

By keeping franchisees connected with customers after installation, the company is creating recurring service opportunities while strengthening long-term relationships. Those systems can also make it easier for owners to anticipate maintenance needs instead of relying solely on customers to call when a product requires attention.

Why Screenmobile Stands Out

Many home service franchises focus on a single repair category or depend on customers bringing projects into a physical location. Screenmobile combines a mobile service model with scalable operations, expanded outdoor living solutions and technology that keeps franchisees connected with customers long after the initial job is complete.

That commitment to improving both the customer experience and the franchise ownership model is what makes Screenmobile one of 1851 Franchise's Most Innovative Franchise Concepts. Rather than simply repairing screens, the company continues evolving into a technology-enabled outdoor living business built around convenience, long-term service and sustainable franchise growth.
