Q&A with Micha Magid and Christos Gourmos, Co-Founders of Mighty Quinn’s Barbeque

What makes Mighty Quinn's Barbeque unique within its industry?

Magid: At Mighty Quinn’s, customers can enjoy a chef-driven menu, without committing hours to the experience. People want more accessible dining options without sacrificing the quality of what they're buying and we are well positioned to take advantage of these trends. We are also one of the very few barbeque restaurants that is supported by a national media presence which is something that we have supported since our inception.

Gourmos: The quality of the product paired with the fast service model is a combination that does not currently exist in today’s industry. The customers are able to experience slow-smoked product in a trendy and comfortable atmosphere. In the fast casual space, customers often experience situations where certain menu items run out or there is a lag in service when the restaurant prepares a certain item. At Mighty Quinn’s, this lag doesn’t exist —  we put a high priority on advanced preparation to ensure that we don’t run out of items throughout the day and leave customers waiting while certain ingredients are being prepared.

From founding to now, what are some of the brand's biggest successes?

Magid: Receiving a 2-star review from The New York Times just four months after we opened was one of our proudest moments. Since then, we've been acknowledged by national publications and food-focused network television shows, which is a testament to the unique and crave-worthy food that is crafted in our kitchens. Second to this was opening a restaurant in Yankee Stadium which made us feel we had really become part of the fabric of an iconic institution and something close to the hearts of our city.

Gourmos: What we are most proud of is achieving consistency across all of our locations and being able to scale productively in a short period of time by fine-tuning our systems. Year over year, we are acknowledged as one of the best barbeque restaurants in New York City, which is a huge accomplishment for the brand.

What plans does the brand have in the coming years?

Magid: Mighty Quinn's set out from the beginning to become synonymous with great barbeque on a national scale. We are in the early stages of this mission, but through the right franchise partners, we are in a position to accelerate this plan. We are determined to define the category as the first ones in this exact space, with no one else that can replicate our food quality or systematic approach.

Gourmos: In the next coming years we aim to grow our corporate-owned locations to 20 units and have another 60 locations franchised in both the U.S. and abroad.

What does an ideal franchisee look like?

Magid: We want passionate restaurateurs who care deeply about the quality of their product and are skilled at making people feel at home. They should be foodies at heart and take pride in every facet of their restaurants.  There is no specific knowledge of barbeque required as we have a seasoned leadership team with a proven training system for support.

Gourmos: We are looking for someone with a desire to be the best in the category. Mighty Quinn’s was built on a passion for being the best at what we do. We would like to see our franchisees have this same passion and grow with us from the ground level.

Why is Mighty Quinn's Barbeque a good investment?

Magid: Mighty Quinn's is in the early stages of its rollout with very attractive territories still available. We are the first mover in fast casual barbeque, which means there is extremely limited competition in this category. Our tested and successful model has been fine-tuned over six years of operating history and perfected with five franchised locations overseas. On top of being one of the first in the space, our corporate-owned locations have noted impressive AUVs between $2,475,493 to $3,273,192. New franchisees will be coming into the system with 15 locations, not 150. This means they will get to work closely with our leadership team as we are at the ground-level of growth.

Gourmos: Mighty Quinn’s is on trend with everything that is changing in the industry right now. While other full-service restaurants are working on shifting their focus to meet the demands of online ordering and delivery - Mighty Quinn’s already integrated this technology into the offering so franchisees won’t have to worry about that moving forward. We have systems in place that makes the model extremely scalable, easy to run and results in a great return on investment. And, we have proven that we can successfully operate international restaurants in markets that are completely different from New York City through a franchise model. People have always been excited about barbeque and we are offering it in an environment that is completely different than what they have seen before!
