Potbelly Has a New CEO

Former Wendy’s EVP Robert Wright has replaced Alan Johnson as the sandwich franchise’s president and CEO.

Sandwich franchise Potbelly has a new CEO, the brand announced on Monday. Former Wendy’s EVP Robert Wright will step into the role previously occupied by Alan Johnson, who joined Potbelly just three years ago. The brand has not offered a reason for Johnson’s departure.

Wright steps into the dual role of CEO and president with no shortage of industry experience. Before joining Wendy’s, the industry veteran had already worked for foodservice franchisors including Charley’s Philly Steaks, Checkers* Drive-In Restaurants and Domino’s.

According to QSR Magazine, Wright’s primary focus “will be accelerating its turnaround efforts, including the guest experience, brand positioning, and cost structure and asset base.”

The pandemic placed a significant burden on Potbelly, which said in May that it’s considering the closure of up to 100 stores.

However, the chain has seen consistent recovery in sales. In June, Potbelly said that its same-store sales were declining in the mid-20 percent range after a nearly 70 percent drop in March. Potbelly is currently undergoing a turnaround strategy called Project Aurora, which includes a consolidated menu and a move from discount-based promotions to product-based promotions.

Wright’s new title comes with a $650,000 annual salary and a $400,000 sign-on bonus. He started on Monday.
