Franchise Sales Leader: Shawn Caric
Brand: Smoothie King
Shawn Caric has spent much of his career helping franchise brands grow their unit counts, but the part of the job he values most is not about numbers. It is the relationships. Caric grew up around small business, working in his uncle’s sporting goods store as a teenager and later helping with his parents’ card shop and catering business. After college, he joined Hallmark Cards, where he worked with independent business owners under a licensing model that closely resembled franchising.
His formal entry into franchising came when he was recruited to Dunkin’, then still a largely regional concept with ambitions to expand nationally. Caric joined a team tasked with building a more structured franchise recruitment program and ultimately spent 18 years helping the brand expand from East Coast stronghold to national presence.
“Without franchising or food experience, I said, ‘Sure,’” Caric said. “It was all about relationships with small business owners. We built it out, and the rest was history.”
Today, as vice president of franchising for Smoothie King, Caric brings those decades of experience to a brand he believes has a similarly significant runway ahead.
Relationships Are the Real Measure of Franchise Development
After years of recruiting franchisees across the country, Caric has helped thousands of entrepreneurs enter franchise systems. When asked what he is most proud of, however, he does not immediately point to the deals closed or markets developed.
“The real answer was the relationships that I have created,” Caric said. “To see families invest their lives, quite honestly, never mind the money, but their lives and their children and so on and so forth.”
For Caric, that perspective is essential because a franchise agreement represents far more than another unit on a development map. It can mean a family investing its savings, changing careers and committing years of effort to a new business.
That responsibility also means knowing when not to move forward. “The nos are probably as important or more important for both sides,” he said. “Sometimes you just have to protect them from themselves.”
Whether that means declining a candidate who is not the right fit or rejecting a real estate site that looks attractive on paper but fails the brand’s standards, Caric believes discipline protects both the franchisee and the franchisor over the long term.
Finding the Right Fit for First-Time and Multi-Unit Operators
One of the characteristics Caric appreciates most about Smoothie King is the flexibility of the business model for different types of operators. With relatively low labor requirements and efficient operations, he believes the concept can provide an accessible entry point for first-time franchisees entering food or hospitality.
“We don’t say easy. Nothing’s easy, right? People are involved,” Caric said. “But the efficient operations make it a beautiful brand for first-timers in the hospitality or food space or franchising space.”
At the same time, Smoothie King can complement the portfolios of established multi-unit restaurant operators.
Because smoothies sit outside major categories such as burgers, pizza, chicken, sandwiches and coffee, Caric says the brand can provide diversification without directly competing with an operator’s existing concepts.
“We fit nicely into portfolios,” he said. “We’re not going to compete with what they’re doing. We’re going to complement that menu and give them something to be proud of.”
The concept’s real estate flexibility adds another layer of appeal. With footprints around 1,200 square feet and options for inline or drive-thru locations, Smoothie King can fit into multi-tenant developments owned or controlled by sophisticated operators.
For Caric, those factors create an opportunity to meet candidates where they are, whether they are buying their first franchise or adding another brand to an already substantial portfolio.
Growth Requires Protecting the Brand Experience
Caric is also careful not to let Smoothie King’s operational simplicity become a reason for franchisees to underestimate what running the business requires.
“You can still screw up a smoothie,” he said. “You can still have a bad guest experience even though it is low labor and efficient operations.”
That distinction speaks to Caric’s broader philosophy about franchise development. A proven model can give an entrepreneur an advantage, but it does not remove the need for execution.
The right franchisee still needs to build teams, serve guests and uphold the brand’s standards day after day.
It is also why Caric believes franchise development is ultimately about finding people capable of representing the brand well, not merely those who meet the financial qualifications.
Helping Build Smoothie King’s Next Chapter
Caric joined Smoothie King at a moment of continued evolution for the brand.
Smoothie King has expanded beyond the traditional smoothie with bowls and its newer Power Eats platform, including toast and flatbread offerings designed to increase check averages, expand dayparts and complement its beverage lineup.
The company is also undergoing a broader brand refresh intended to make the concept feel more approachable to a wider consumer base without abandoning its roots in nutrition and purposeful products.
For Caric, those initiatives strengthen the franchise development story because they give existing and prospective operators additional ways to grow traffic and revenue.
“We’re seeing strong comps because of it,” he said. “It’s driving more traffic. It’s driving more guests. It’s driving more daypart usage of our brand.”
Still, after decades of large-scale development, Caric’s philosophy remains rooted in something much simpler than market maps or development projections.
It comes back to relationships.
“I could pretty much go to any state in the country and have a relationship with somebody that I’ve recruited into a brand and they’ve been successful,” Caric said.
For Caric, that is the real measure of a successful career in franchise development: not simply how many stores were opened, but how many people were placed into opportunities where they could build something lasting.
