Franchise Opportunity Deep Dive: A legacy smoothie and health-focused QSR brand that pioneered the smoothie category and now operates 1,300+ locations worldwide.

Smoothie King is a purpose-driven smoothie and health QSR brand. Today, the company serves functional, customizable smoothies, bowls and a growing lineup of protein-forward food items through more than 1,300 locations worldwide. The concept is built around “Clean Blends,” using whole fruits and vegetables, no artificial flavors or preservatives, and a growing “No No List” of 50+ ingredients it refuses to use, all while making it simple for guests to grab a healthy meal or snack on the go.
Smoothie King was founded in 1973 in the New Orleans area by Steve Kuhnau, who began blending real fruit, nutrients and protein at home to address his own health challenges. Those early blends led to the opening of the original Smoothie King bar and ultimately to a new restaurant category.
In 1989, Smoothie King became the first smoothie franchise in the United States, expanding its offerings to include sports beverages, energy bars, snacks, vitamin supplements and other nutritious products. In 2012, the brand was sold to SK USA, Inc., led by CEO and former multi-unit franchisee Wan Kim who had already built more than 100 Smoothie King stores in South Korea before acquiring the company. Today, Smoothie King is a Dallas-based, privately held franchise system with over 1,300 units worldwide
Mission: Inspire people to live a healthy and active lifestyle by crafting purpose-driven smoothies and bowls that meet guests’ specific goals in a way that is fun, delicious and convenient.
Vision: To make the world a better place by nourishing healthy habits and becoming an integral part of each guest’s health and fitness journey through clean, functional menu innovation and thoughtful partnerships.
Smoothie King is actively developing across much of the U.S., with open territories across the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and additional expansion opportunities in the Midwest and West. Explore the interactive map here.

From the moment a candidate is awarded a franchise, Smoothie King provides a structured opening roadmap. The process starts with a required 90-minute orientation (via Zoom) within the first 60 days, where the team reviews budgeting, financing, site selection, design, ordering, construction timelines and overall project planning. Real estate specialists then connect franchisees with preferred brokers in their trade area to identify viable sites that meet Smoothie King’s criteria for traffic, co-tenancy and demographics.
New franchisees, operators and managers participate in a four-week training program: three consecutive weeks of in-store, hands-on instruction at a regional Certified Training Store, followed by one week of classroom training at the Smoothie King Home Office in Dallas. This “cohort” experience covers operations, product preparation, guest service, team leadership, inventory, scheduling and more. The brand also conducts five days of on-site training around opening (three days before and two days after) to coach teams in a live environment. Ongoing training resources are available through the brand’s intranet and support channels.
Smoothie King leverages more than five decades of operating experience to support franchisees in areas like site selection, lease negotiations guidance, store design, supply chain coordination and opening marketing plans. Dedicated field marketing and operations teams help franchisees implement local marketing strategies, interpret performance data, optimize labor and throughput, and respond to competitive dynamics in their trade areas. Franchisees also benefit from national brand campaigns, limited-time offers, menu innovation and partnerships that help keep the brand top-of-mind with health-conscious consumers.
The brand has standardized store systems designed to be simple to learn and operate, including optimized blenders, refrigeration, digital menu displays and POS platforms. Smoothie King provides franchisees with access to its Healthy Rewards mobile app and loyalty ecosystem, which connects guests with frictionless ordering, digital payment, offers and points-based rewards. The back-end systems, coupled with an internal intranet and digital training tools, are intended to give franchisees both a competitive guest experience and better visibility into their unit-level performance.
Restaurant experience is not required, but the brand indicates the ideal franchisee has an entrepreneurial mindset and experience in sales, marketing, restaurant and/or retail, along with a strong passion for health and helping guests live more active lifestyles.
Smoothie King expects franchisees to be actively engaged in the business, whether as owner-operators or as hands-on multi-unit developers working closely with store-level management. Owners should plan to invest significant time during the initial build-out, training and opening ramp-up periods. Over time, some franchisees may move toward a more supervisory role with store managers handling day-to-day operations, especially in multi-unit scenarios, but the brand typically looks for operators who are committed to maintaining standards, driving local marketing and building a performance-oriented culture.
Smoothie King does not offer in-house financing; however, according to its financing materials and FAQ, the brand is SBA-friendly and maintains relationships with approved vendors and third-party financing partners for categories like equipment, buildout and POS. Prospective owners are encouraged to discuss funding options directly with the franchise development team and to work with lenders familiar with franchise concepts.
“I think the greatest thing for me right now is really how involved I am in the community. One year we had this big community event. It's a huge Gala, and they award people of the community what they call the ‘Heart of the Community’. And one year I was awarded the award for our community works.”
— JJ Johnson, Smoothie King of Rome, Georgia
“I didn’t know that what we do touches so many lives—and I didn’t know that I would have such a purpose.”
— Amanda Ristic, Multi-Unit Smoothie King Franchisee Across Michigan and Ohio

The smoothie and juice bar sector sits at the intersection of several major consumer trends: health and wellness, convenience, functional nutrition and on-the-go meal replacement. The global smoothies market was valued at around $16.15 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach approximately $38.39 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of about 10.1% from 2025 to 2033.
In the United States, the smoothie market was estimated at roughly $6.79 billion in 2024, with forecasts suggesting it could approach $9.98 billion by 2033, driven by rising demand for functional beverages and meal replacements
Smoothie King’s competitive advantages stem from its history as the original smoothie franchise, clear Clean Blends positioning, broad functional menu architecture (goal-based blends, bowls, GLP-1–support options, Power Eats food items) and scaled footprint backed by a robust franchise system and national marketing presence. Competitors include Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Jamba, Main Squeeze Juice Co. and Playa Bowls.
