It wasn’t long before a sip of success led Christie Dornier down a road toward a fleet of Smoothie King franchises.
As a full-time nurse, Dornier often supported her family’s multiple business endeavors, but she never jumped in the ring herself, until her family dynamic changed unexpectedly in 2010. Dornier’s father, the patriarch of an entrepreneurial family, began suffering from health problems. Dornier, wanting to save the family business and ensure her father’s legacy continued, bought out his franchise and partnered with her sister to keep their Smoothie King location open. She eventually left her nursing career and opened a second location in their hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
“I have always been passionate about health and fitness, which suited me well in my previous career as a nurse,” Dornier said. “So this franchise was a perfect fit for me, in that I can help others find their passion for their own health.”
Dornier has loved the corporate support and responsiveness across the board. She has since played an integral role in expanding the brand, encouraged by a strong leadership system stacked with passionate brand ambassadors.
“I have always loved Smoothie King on a personal level and since Wan Kim has come on board as CEO, he has elevated the brand to new levels,” Dornier said. “He has focused on updating our look as well as concentrated everything we do to fulfilling our mission: inspiring a healthy and active lifestyle.”
Pleased with the growth of her top-performing region, Dornier recently signed a five-store deal in the northeast Orlando market with Louisiana-based Barry Edwards of Gold Sky LLC. The expansion will be underway throughout the next three years, but Dornier had her sights set even further in the future before the ink even dried.
“We opened our first location at the end of June and are working on our second in Orlando,” Dornier said. “We are excited to bring a brand we love to a new market. Hopefully we will expand beyond those five in the future.”
Smoothie King, with more than 700 units worldwide, has made a concerted effort to expand throughout the Orlando area. Operating in 33 states, the Caymans, Singapore and the Republic of Korea, Smoothie King is working to become a leading global franchise.
Dornier has become a great example of the vivacious multi-unit franchisees the brand hopes to recruit and retain. With a background in health and a passion for “smoothies with a purpose,” Dornier considers her career as a franchisee more of a passion project than a job. She only has one regret—she wishes she had started sooner.
“If I had it to do all over again, the only thing I would do differently is to have been involved sooner,” Dornier said. “I truly love this brand and believe in it 100 percent.”
