The Gig Economy Enters Franchising
While gig-style work is generally accepted in creative spaces, it has not traditionally been embraced by retail and dining concepts. Labor shortages are changing that.
According to Mathieu Stevenson, CEO of Snagajob, the labor landscape is ever-changing, meaning franchises have begun to embrace gig workers.
“Plainly speaking, gig work is when independent workers provide on-demand services to a company for a temporary period of time,” he wrote. “Gig work is becoming increasingly popular among franchisees for many reasons, but mainly because it offers the flexibility workers now crave.”
Labor-related challenges have been a topic of discussion in the franchising space for over a year. Though labor shortages were raging on early in 2021, largely as a result of the pandemic, the issue has persisted.
Though embracing the gig economy is a great way for franchisees to mitigate the consequences of a labor shortage, companies are not immune to the scrutiny of gig-type hiring practices. Stevenson, however, says, “it’s a win-win for everyone.”
