Just 27 years old, Alexis Burrell is the youngest franchise owner with <a href="https://workoutanytimefranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=the-great-franchisee-alexis-burrell-workout-anytime-virginia-beach-2716807" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Workout Anytime</a>, the 180-plus-unit fitness franchise. Despite her young age, Burrell brings plenty of experience to the role. After graduating from college, Burrell took a job as a sales manager at a <a href="https://1851franchise.com/workoutanytime/info">Workout Anytime</a> location in Charlotte, and she’s been with the brand ever since. Recently, Burrell moved back to her hometown of Virginia Beach, and she’s leveraging her on-the-ground experience with the fitness franchise to open three units of her own.We spoke to Burrell to learn more about her journey to franchise ownership.&nbsp;<h4>1851 Franchise: Tell us your story — what did you do before franchising?</h4>Alexis Burrell: I was born in the Netherlands; my father was in the Navy and we moved back to the United States when I was three. I attended Great Bridge High School and went to Wingate University on a softball and academic scholarship where I received both my bachelor’s degree, and master’s degree. I received my bachelor’s degree in Sport Management and Biology, and my Master's in Sport Management.&nbsp;I always knew I wanted to have my own training facility, but I didn’t know what that looked like. I did my internships for the Norfolk Tides while in school. After graduate school, I walked into a softball and baseball facility and created a position for myself as the Director of Softball Operations at Batter Up in Monroe, NC. After about 8 months, I learned that my dream of having my own facility needed to be more general, and not so sport-specific.&nbsp;I joined Workout Anytime in 2017 and within eight months I was promoted to General Manager. I was then promoted again to Regional Manager another 8 months later. The thing I love most about Workout Anytime is that you’re able to work with anyone on all types of fitness levels, not just athletes. Workout Anytime has such a diverse group of members, which is another reason I fell in love with the brand. Having a faith background, I’m supposed to love and serve others, and what better way than to share that than through fitness and improving people’s lifestyles.&nbsp;I’m excited to introduce the operation in the 757 area and expand on all the knowledge I’ve learned from Chris Grove and Hemanth Grandhige. Those are the owners of the Charlotte, NC locations. Chris is the owner that hired me and tucked me under his wing for most of my time in my Workout Anytime career. To this day Chris Grove is still a mentor to me. Hayley Whitley is my business partner that will be helping me with opening all three locations. She played softball with me in college, and later was a personal trainer at Workout Anytime Indian Trail. Hayley was the person that really introduced me to fitness after college and to Workout Anytime. We’ve done college athletics, Spartan Races, NPC Bodybuilding shows, and now we’re opening these gyms together. She has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Nutrition and Integrative Health. Hayley has 8+ years of personal training experience and has a very diverse training background. Us two together are a dynamic duo for sure. Hayley will be taking the reins with personal training, while I handle sales and backend work.<h4>1851: Why did you choose to go into franchising? What was the trigger moment that led you to become a franchisee with Workout Anytime?&nbsp;</h4>Burrell: Chris brought me down to the Workout Anytime headquarters in 2018. It was the first time the brand had hosted a personal training academy which was a four-day event. Being around such like-minded people with the same goal and vision just lit a fire under my butt. As soon as we left Chris asked me what I thought and I told him, “I want to do this for the rest of my life.”<h4>1851: What value do you see your business providing to the community, and what plans do you have for growth?&nbsp;</h4>Burrell: I’ve noticed that there wasn’t anything like Workout Anytime in the 757 area. I like to think Workout Anytime is a combination of a lot of the gyms in the area. We are a true 24/7 gym, with low cost, a ton of free weights and machines, with certified trainers on staff to help ensure results are being met. In my opinion, the staff we have and hire is what really seals the deal. Our mission statement is to provide a friendly, convenient, life-changing journey with passion. When you walk into our Workout Anytime, it is our goal to know every member by name. I’d say for the most part we’ve done a great job with that. We want everyone to feel comfortable coming into our Workout Anytime regardless of their fitness background. We want you to know we’re your “Fit Fam” and want to see you win in life and in the gym.&nbsp;<h4>1851: Are you using your Workout Anytime to do any community outreach?&nbsp;</h4>Burrell: We really value our military and 1st responders. They immediately get discounts when they sign up at our locations. When our gym first opens we typically go to the closest police and fire stations and give out free memberships to staff just to show appreciation for all they do in our communities.&nbsp;Being so close to a ton of naval bases in this area. I’d love to be able to partner with the USO foundation in the future. My brother, Christopher Burrell, is a wounded warrior and the resources they’ve provided him along with other wounded veterans don’t go unnoticed. I’d love to help wounded or injured veterans find a place to work out and exercise to help with their mental health. What do you want us to know?Eli Cohen:&nbsp;Getting into QSR franchising is really my second act — and it’s been an exciting evolution. I built my first career in commercial real estate, co-founding a firm that acquired and operated more than $600 million in multifamily properties across the country. As the market matured and returns compressed, I started looking for my next challenge — something that combined entrepreneurship, operations and real estate.That search led to the restaurant industry and the formation of C5 Restaurants, our operating platform. I targeted the acquisition of the top-performing Fazoli’s franchise group in West Texas specifically because of the exceptional team in place — experienced operators with the capability and desire to grow well beyond those six locations.What drew me to QSR is that it still scratches the same itch I’ve always loved — every new restaurant is also a real estate deal. Developing 40 Layne’s locations over the next decade means 40 great projects to bring to life, and that part of the process is a lot of fun for me. Layne’s Chicken Fingers became the natural next step: a Texas-born brand with strong leadership, simple operations, and a culture that fits perfectly with how we build teams.1851 Franchise: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Cohen:&nbsp;Early on, I viewed franchising primarily as a real estate and investment vehicle — a way to own great locations and benefit from proven systems. They’re smart, grounded and focused on sustainable growth. I also love the simplicity of the menu — it’s delicious, operationally clean and designed to scale. The economics work, the prototype is efficient, and the team has a disciplined approach to site selection and development.One thing that really impressed me was their willingness to say no. I brought them a ground-up site that looked great on paper — high visibility, strong traffic counts — but they turned it down because it wasn’t the right trade area. That level of discipline and long-term thinking is rare, and it reinforced that we were partnering with the right brand.For us at C5, Layne’s is more than a brand — it’s a platform to build great teams and great communities across South and West Texas.1851 Franchise: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?Cohen:&nbsp;Our goal with C5 is to build a platform with real scale. We’re developing 40 Layne’s Chicken Fingers locations over the next decade, starting in West Texas and expanding through San Antonio, Corpus Christi and surrounding markets. Each region has strong demographics, steady growth and plenty of room for a Texas-born brand like Layne’s to thrive.We’re building a business designed for longevity — not just rapid unit growth. While earning my degree, I did a UX content writing internship for three years. Painting seemed like the right fit.1851:&nbsp;How did you decide franchising made sense for you?Joe: My dad instilled an entrepreneurial spirit in me and my two older sisters. He gets excited about business ideas. And I share that to some degree. We’ve got two daughters; one is a Navy veteran, and the other is a graduate from Georgia Tech. More personally, I served in the Air Force during the first Gulf War period. Then, after getting business degrees from Mercer and Kennesaw State, I went into private practice.&nbsp;I had an opportunity to serve the community through politics as well. I’ve always enjoyed serving the community in some tangible way, either through the military, politics, or most recently, through veteran service organizations. I saw a lot of situations where people were coming back from war, and they didn’t have the services they needed; some of them were getting into trouble with the law. We worked really hard here in Hall County to develop a court system specifically for veterans. Of all the things I was able to do in local politics, that was the thing I’m most proud of.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Lutz:&nbsp;I’ve worked a lot of different management roles in my time—from being a manager for a large telecommunications provider to several distribution companies. I got to the point in my career where I wanted to do something where I could bring my family along. The business model that we’re running here is family-run; my youngest daughter is currently acting as my office manager, and her fiancé is my field manager. I looked at a bunch of franchising roles, but this one had a great niche that I didn’t see with a lot of others—aging in place. I felt like this lens made the franchise opportunity worthwhile, not only financially, but personally gratifying as well.&nbsp;1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Lutz: One of the perceptions I had was, ‘Why would I want to pay somebody to work for them?’ The second thing was, ‘Why would I pay you for something I could probably do myself?’ I had to sit down and think about where I could add value within the structure. After starting this franchise, I don’t think I could have gotten this thing off the ground nearly as fast as I did without the support. Our franchisor does a great job of not necessarily holding your hand, but putting all the checkmarks in front of you so you can plan everything out. I found that it makes sense to follow a franchise model when the model has been laid out for you. I don't mind paying a franchise fee when I can see the impact of the services I’m receiving back.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Lutz: I was approached by a franchise consultant out of the blue, and whatever he said intrigued me enough to take another call. What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Lutz: First of all, I want to set up a business that can be generational. I’m really looking forward to making the business successful and then handing it off to my kids—in this particular case, one child and her fiancé. As far as growth goes, I believe that the growth needs to be somewhat realistic. If you were to buy up territory and grow your area, then your service is going to diminish based on your resources. Could I go buy another franchise with the franchisor? Absolutely—and it’s probably the smarter way to grow. If I were to pull everything into this franchise, eventually you spend more time driving to locations than you do actually helping people. But what I can do is identify great opportunities to engage with the public, put together big teams, and develop them. The fear of not knowing has to be put behind you.
