ABOUT THE MELT

The Melt is a West Coast-based fast-casual burger brand built around one clear objective: deliver an “I Love It Here” experience to every guest, every visit. The concept has grown into a high-volume burger business centered on a highly differentiated signature product, the MeltBurger. Made with a one-third-pound blend of all-natural Angus and Wagyu beef, the MeltBurger is chopped on the grill and cooked through a proprietary process that melts aged cheddar directly into the meat.

Unlike concepts that rush to franchise before proving performance, The Melt has spent years building, testing and refining every element of the model inside company-owned restaurants. Operations, labor models, kitchen flow, menu engineering and guest experience standards were all developed under real-world corporate conditions.

Today, the brand operates dozens of company-owned locations, including one non-traditional food court unit, with eight additional restaurants under construction or in development.

The Melt is not currently offering franchises for sale. Any offer to sell a franchise will be made only through a Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) and in compliance with applicable registration requirements.

Corporate performance provides meaningful insight into the model’s potential. Company-owned locations average more than $3.4 million in annual sales, with the top third averaging over $5 million and select units exceeding $6 million annually. Typical restaurant footprints range from approximately 1,900 to 2,300 square feet in endcap or inline locations.

The Melt is preparing to franchise from a position of operational strength. Over nearly a decade, the brand focused on tightening fundamentals, rebuilding the menu and aligning the organization around a clear hospitality mission. Leadership gathered direct feedback from guests and crew members, corrected throughput challenges, strengthened service standards and clarified the brand’s core point of differentiation.

The result is a concept that combines craveable, differentiated food with a durable operating model. Company-owned locations are posting strong unit volumes in day-to-day conditions, with real labor, real demand swings and real peak-hour pressure. The brand is franchising because the model is ready, not because the category is hot.

On the product side, the MeltBurger stands out in a crowded burger category. The proprietary process that melts aged cheddar directly into the chopped Angus and Wagyu beef creates a flavor and texture profile guests can’t easily replicate at home. The broader menu supports that centerpiece with elevated comfort food, including indulgent Melted Classic sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, mac-n-cheese, crispy fries, handspun milkshakes and more.

The operational model is straightforward by design. The kitchen is built with discipline and intention, relying on a streamlined equipment package that includes clamshell grills, fryers, impinger ovens, a shake machine, walk-in refrigeration and standard prep stations. This approach supports throughput and labor efficiency while maintaining premium food quality.

Culturally, The Melt’s “I Love It Here” philosophy drives decision-making across the system. The brand prioritizes hospitality, crew engagement and leadership stability, recognizing that guest experience is directly tied to team experience.

The Melt is looking for experienced, hands-on operators who really know the restaurant business and value smart, disciplined execution. This is a great fit for people or groups with established operations, strong leadership and a long-term mindset. The leadership team has executives with decades of experience growing huge restaurant brands, so franchisees receive guidance that's been proven in the real world.

The $173.6 billion burger category remains one of the most resilient and accessible segments in foodservice. The Melt positions itself between traditional quick service and higher-priced better-burger competitors, delivering premium ingredients at a value-forward price point that supports frequency.

The Melt has also set itself apart in the late-night hours. While many fast-casual restaurants shut down early, The Melt often keeps its doors open until 2 a.m. or even later. A big chunk of its sales — nearly 40% — happens after 8 p.m., which brings in extra cash that many rivals simply miss out on. This strong late-night business not only makes each location more profitable but also makes the brand appealing for a wider range of dining times.

Executive Q&A

Executive Q&A with Ralph Bower, CEO of The Melt

In this episode of the “Meet the Franchise” podcast, 1851 Franchise Publisher Nick Powills sat down with the man who traded a prestigious military career for a $4.75-an-hour entry-level restaurant job because he saw a newspaper ad claiming pizza managers made more than admirals. That leap of faith kicked off an impressive trajectory through the executive ranks of Yum! Brands, Popeyes and Domino’s, led Bower to his current mission: transforming The Melt from a startup into a high-volume powerhouse.

Under Bower’s leadership, The Melt didn’t just grow. It exploded. By stripping away complex corporate mission statements and replacing them with a single core value, he pushed average unit volume from a modest $700,000 to a staggering $3.5 million, with some locations topping $6 million.
