The last time I went to Las Vegas was in 2011 for my best friend’s wedding. When I was there, I realized it was my SEVENTH visit to Las Vegas. I think that “technically” makes me an expert on the subject, right?

I’m gearing up for trip #8 in February for the 2015 IFA Convention – I’m excited to see clients and learn from the franchise industry’s experts. To help those of you who are Vegas newbies or haven’t been in a while, I put together my top ten tips for surviving Las Vegas.

1.) Drink water. Then drink more water. Then drink even more water. Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it. You’ll save tons of money on bottled water.

2.) Don’t try to hail a cab on the strip – it’s illegal. I learned that one the hard way.

3.) Take some time to recharge your batteries every day – literally and figuratively. Bring your chargers with you during the convention and take a break at midday to rest and check in with email.

4.) Bring a few pairs of comfortable shoes. Even the most comfy shoes start to hurt after 12 hours on your feet. Toss an extra pair in your bag each day and switch before heading out for the evening.

5.) Get some sleep. This sounds like the most fundamental tip but when people get to Vegas, clocks are really hard to come by and all bets are off (HA!).

6.) As I mentioned in my column about holiday party etiquette, don’t be the first to arrive or the last to leave a party. Period.

7.) Remember that even though IFA takes place in America’s Playground, we’re still there for business. Make time for fun, but not at the expense of professional goals.

8.) Plan ahead. I just downloaded the IFA Program and was overwhelmed by all the interesting topics for panels and breakout sessions. It’s going to take me a while to pare down the list and figure out my schedule. Start now and save yourself the stress later.

9.) But don’t overextend yourself. Make sure to build in time for rest and recharge breaks (as noted above), impromptu meetings and catching up on the work that’s piling up back at home. Being a little flexible will go a long way.

10.) Stick together. Find a convention buddy and plan your schedule with them. You’re more likely to stay on track– plus its way more fun to network with a buddy.

I’m sure I missed a bunch of tips, so feel free to chime in on your best survival strategies. See you in Vegas!
